Got my motorcycle permit today so I went for a quick jaunt around the neighborhood to celebrate (shhhhh! The police don’t patrol here an d have no way of knowing it’s not registered yet.)
Turns out that A) speedo doesn’t work right. Halfway through 2nd gear it indicates 10mph and B) those new stiff springs that are being shipped right now are much needed cause my fat ass makes the wheel scrape a lot.
Getting this thing inspected after registration is gonna be a fun adventure. Nearest station is in the next town over which means I have to venture out onto a 40mph road. I’ve never gone that fast on a two-wheeled vehicle before.

That might actually be accurate, these things only go like 35-40 mph

Markings on the speedo indicate 2 should take me up to 25. Speedo doesn't move at all until I hit 2nd, and I think I'm going closer to 15-18 when it's indicating 10.

Easy enough to run a GPS speedometer app (or even a cycling app or whatever) and see how fast you are actually going.

Could get a phone mount and use GPS speed on it for now?
Loving the updates on this journey! I demand more video! :P

That is the cutest horn ever.....also, surpri
singly loud-sounding? :P
How’s the engine running? Any hiccups after being dormant for so long?

It’s having some cold idle issues, and choke doesn’t really help it. For now I’ve got the idle speed cranked up to overcome it but I have to buckle down an d actually fig ure it out.

If my experience is any indicator, the odds of getting pulled over on a scooter are near nil :)
Have fun!

Th e missing license plate is a bit of a giveaway that I’m riding illegally. MA considers this a motorcycle so it has to be registered, insured, and safety inspected .

Yeah, same here, except for the inspection, but I rode around for several months on a plate that had been expired for like 9 years.

I don’t know what the licensing is like where you live but the permit test was laughably easy for me. You only had to get 18 of 25 questions right and only a quarter of them had anything to do with motorcycles. The rest were general motor ing (“What does a white, downwards facing, triangular sign with red border indicate?”)
That gave me a permit with few restrictions (no passengers and no nighttime riding) that’s good for two years.
No wonder theres so many idiot squids out there if it's this easy to legally drive a motorcycle.

At least that gets it going! :D Shouldn’t be too hard to sort I’d imagine!

I’m 90% sure it’s carb related but I’ve never really worked with them and I’m reduced to just fiddling with various s crews on it to see of they do anything.

If I remember correctly, after a very simple examination I could probably ride a moped (49 cc max). I’ve heard (I wonder if it’s a local urban legend) that bigger bikes are also eligible if fitted with a restrictor to the inlet(s), but I imagine that would not apply to a 35 - year old 650 flat-twin. Also, poor bike.
After a year (or is it two?) I would be able to ride whatever I please.
