"Takuro Spirit" (takurospirit)

Damn you autumn, you get too dark too fast! Donned my elastic strap- on headlight and went to work pulling what was left under the dash of the Esprit. Dash/column wiring, HVAC box, etc.
I don’t know WHY or HOW there is this much wiring in an pre-computer car from the 70's, but now that its all tagged and disconnected it can come out.
It all snakes around the column where 80% of it is plugged into for some dumb reason. I a lso removed the tail light harness and rear defog/seatbelt reminder harness from the driver’s side rocker. The only thing left on the passenger side is the rear speaker wiring. I’ll get to that later, when its lighter out.
Onto the outer HVAC housing. Removed all the bolts (or so I thought) and pulled the heater hoses to drain the heater core. And made a mess.
There was one last hidden bolt above the frame rail that I needed a foot and a half of extension to reach, but then the case slid right off. AFTER I had to bend a brake line and angle the case up to clear the back of the control arm. Its a tight fit, surprisingly.
With the outer case out of the way I was able to find the mouse nest in the evaporator housing...
And in case I wanted to do an oil change, access the filter VERY easily!
The inner case then was removed, and now everything under the dash save for the pedals and column are out.
After all that goes, the next step I guess is to start removing the heavy bits from the body so I can dispose of its rustiness. Meaning the rear axle, and this hunk of rusty (but running) junk:
Man, my phone’s flash makes everything look 900% worse than it is.
Anyways, now I have an extra inner and out case to make one good one, hopefully. I scored one years ago out of another ‘79, but it has a broken tab or two , and didn’t come with any of the vacuum harness. But it is a lot less rusty and crusty.
Yay for hoarding par ts.

That was a lot of work, but looks like you have a good stock of parts!

Speaking of a horde of parts, I’m not sure if it interchanges with a ‘79 but I do have a spare non-tilt steering column that fits my ‘71 Camaro if you need it. It’s black, but could be painted.

I am left pondering two things
1: might your actual car also have a rats nest in the sam elocation you may need to attend to?
2: that oil filter is nicel y accessible there, can you make an access flap in your car for the future? :D

I don’t think they do... but I do have the original non-tilt one that came with my ‘77.

1: Car came from a field, I am assuming all the mices and rats were left there. Except for that one I saw run out of the hood....
2. M y car is getting an LS motor, and unless I go remote-mounted, it’ll hang straight down on the opposite side surrounded by oil pan as they all do.

Steering column for a ‘71 Camaro, you don’t say? I’m in need of one for my ‘71.

Right now it needs pulled apart and reassembled ( the lock cylinder doesn’t match up with the ignition switch detents correctly) but if you need it I can do that.

That works for me as the current column is a disaster. Shoot me an email at my full name @ me .com and we can coordinate from there.
Thank you !
