There’s nothing currently using the 912 nameplate. A 911 with no luxury features and a turbo four in back?

It’s called a base Cayman. No reason Porsche would introduce another car in the same segment.

The base 718 models are $57,000 with ~300 hp. Why would they introduce a similar model for $40k?
As they say, the best entry-level Porsche is a used Porsche.
2015 CPO Cayman.
275 hp, $39,000 (was $62,000 MSRP when new)

That is an interesting design to take the Taycan design language into the small sports car segment. Maybe the next-gen to replace the 718 might adopt a bit of that... but I don’t see them going down-market from that segment. There is very little up-side to Porsche as a brand, to do that, when Audi and VW exist.
The companies that should be looking at that segment are Toyota/Subaru, Nissan/Renault, Honda, and FCA/Pugeot-Citroen.
Especially Toyota/Subaru. The layout of the Cayman is not at all difficult to replicate, and they have atmospheric and turbocharged flat engines of their own, that would replicate the geometry.
Implement a PHEV system with the engine and electric motor drive in the back, and an assist/regen at the front axle, and you have a torque-distributing AWD, rear-weight-biased PHEV, non-range-limited performance runabout without half a ton of batteries on-board, like a BEV would have.
That is the ultimate expression of MR2, as well as an AWD Subaru performance coupe, as well. With front and rear trunks, like Porsche, and unlike having no trunk at all, like ZZW30 MR2 Spyder.
Far better than 86/BRZ.
