I got lucky and was able to find another purple ‘09 fit at a junkyard 2 hours away. So Saturday my partner and I took a road trip to ge t what I could get. Unfortunately, it was rough, so I couldn’t get everything I wanted. But I was able to get the vital parts I needed.

I Got a front bumper cover, left fender, and left rocker. I also got a rear hatch that has a dent, but isn’t bent like mine is from the hit & run last year. Today I got every thing but the hatch installed (I need another set of hands for that). The parts aren’t perfect, but neither is the Fit, so it looks fine. And way better than after it rolled into the fence last week.

2 hours? Geez. Only yard that has a Mk3 VW in thr same color as the Golf is an hour and a half away. I'm never buying a rare color car again.

Im in West Michigan where the junkyards have all had a harlequin mk3 in the past few years. So I’m pretty sure we’ve got a junk one in your color.

What's the color and what's the part?

Aw... Poor Harlequin,,,

My paint is Sequoia Green Metallic. It was offered from 1995 to 1997 on Golfs and Jettas. If it can be found, I'm constantly on the lookout for a hood and rear driver's side door. Golf and Jetta doors are the same.

Spot of advice before I dive into this kind of work myself - how do you find junkyards that have what you want?

Just call the buggers up and ask? Or is there some secret database where I can say what I have just the one time and some magical thing tells me where I can find them ?

Not sure about where you are, but the local pick-and-pull yards around me have databases with the cars listed and photos of each. You just search up your kind of car, find the ones of the right year and look at the pics to see if the cars in their stock have the parts you need or if the parts are damaged. The downside is the pics are often from when the car was first added to their inventory so if the car has already been picked over you may not know until you get there.

Most non pull-it-yourself junkyards could probably tell you if they have what you need by just giving them a call, but if they are decent they also often have their cars listed on their website in a similar way.

Most yards have websites with stocks, almost all of those sites have VINs on them you can decode. The good yards have pictures, too. I get texts and email alerts when a yard near me gets a Mk3 or a Saturn S car in.

Another site I’ve used a bit lately is Row52, which I guess collects data from a bunch of yards and has all of their stock shown in one place to make searching easier.

C o worker told me about carpart when I was looking for a fender, so happy he did. Super easy and cheap, $300 plus a little shipping and the  car was good again.
