This is easily the fucking stupidest this I’ve seen in a while. Either make them real or do turndowns, but under no circumstance should this kind of bullshit ever exist in the world.

The argument goes that real tips look nasty over time with the acidic water vapor that comes out the pipes due to combustion so give them all the looks of the real deal, and have them exit in the real place, but drop them out before the tips get nasty. I can’t say I’m upset about it...I see the logic...but I can see why people would get upset about it. Fake is fake, no matter how you slice it.

I agree. Visible exhaust tips seem archaic to me on most cars . I get that people want to show them off or whatever, but it’s just another aesthetic trend that tries to mimic the aftermarket.
I think there are plenty of cases where visible tips are needed, like space constraints on race cars, or to minimize resonance/NVH issues that some downturned tips create, but this particular case is just silly.

I’ve read that Direct Injection engines produce a TON of soot, so tailpipes like this are done to keep customers from complaining about the lack of tailpipes (why you can’t just hide them altogether) or questioning why they are so dirty (when their previous cars did not do this). On boring cars like this ST thing they don’t bother me at all, real exhaust tips wouldn’t make them any cooler. Now a C8 or Miata or Camaro/Mustang with fake tips, that is unacceptable

Then fix the damn problem or pick a tip material that’s actually suitable given the requirements. This ain’t rocket science.

Nothing aggravates me more than fake objects purporting to be functional. There’s no reason why they couldn’t have figured out a solution like, I don’t know, black exhaust tips.

I must admit, completely fake tips attached to a real pair of pipes is a new one on me. I’m not sure whether to applaud the genius or be
disgusted in every fiber. Imagine me doing the most totally disgusted slow clap ever.

Except the very existence of these fake tips is to provide the function of obscuring the sooty exhaust tips from consumers. Now the fake vents on cars.....those I want to put my foot through

Honestly I feel the same way about most elements of modern car design. We have LED headlights that can be tiny and electric fans that mean we barely need grilles, so why is every manufacturer building Audi ripoffs with giant grilles?
(The Porsche Taycan’s design makes me happy)

Are they a completely diverted outlet, or just a baffled diverter that still allows some appearance and sound to come out as it would appear?
Soot and sound directed down does reduce mess and mitigate a little bit of directional sound by directing it at the pavement to radiate the reflected soundwaves in a more radial pattern.
Noise levels measured directly behind the vehicle might be slightly lessened and attenuated, without needing more backpressure in the exhaust system.
A completely diverted outlet may have the same effects on soot and sound, but would seem pointless to have exposed exhaust at all. But people do weird things in the name of fashion.

Yeah, when it comes to design a compromise usually isn’t a middle ground, it’s a total failure.

And the worst of all, as soon as you get close to the giant grilles, you see how many of the little holes are actually blocked. I don’t think we need to go Full Tesla because the nose needs more
differentiation than just an expanse of paint. But yeah, huge grilles are nuts.

But if there’s no fake version of the tips then customers will call the dealership asking where they are, and if they made a mistake and bought some kind of electric car? You have to remember we are not the average consumers. I think I would chop off those fake exhaust tips and stick them on something that’s not a tarted up Escape

I’m fine with differetiating a surface finish, but I have a problem with it masquerading as something its not. Neither the pre or post facelift Tesla front end has figured it out. Porsche did, but that’s because they have a long history of not needing a grille in the bumper to draw inspiration from.

I guess this stems from my design education/background/career that tells me there’s nothing worse than fake. Honesty in design is the easiest way to make something look/function well.

Only the lower bit of the grille is open.
The 2016 Mk3 Superb is the same.

It probably has to do with wanting a given look, however that look is actually TERRIBLE way to have exhaust fumes exit because it can lead to fumes getting sucked back in at speed if the rear hatch is open.

The tips are hidden/tilted to hide soot accumulation. Soot is due to direct injection in low load scenarios, where DI isn’t most effective . This can be solved by using dual injection like Ford and Toyota do.
I wonder why more brands haven’t adopted this technology and also why it isn’t being used in diesel engines.

I wonder if it wouldn’t have been better to use 60 degree chrome turndowns - that way the sound and issues with appearance would have been dodged without being completely fake.
Into just enough of a recess that they don’t stick out and stab people, could make for an underutilized styling touch.

Twice the injection hardware means a much more expensive engine than just running one or the other. Ford has started doing dual injection because they had a lot of problems with build up in the intake tract of their early DI only Ecoboosts.
ETA: Diesel creates soot mostly because of the fuel, not because it’s DI.

Very well said on Porsche . If not for pedestrian regulations, I think we could slowly make our way back to more of a wedge shape all across the industry, especially for EVs.
Grilles have always been a hangup for designers. And when they’ve tried to eliminate them — even on ICE vehicles — it usually doesn’t go over too well.
The Mk3 Passat (B3) comes to mind. Too far ahead of its time. The cooling comes mainly from the lower grille, but the badge also allowed air to pass through it. Pretty universally derided in the reviews back in the early 90s. But definitely a little avant-garde. Almost French.

Honestly I really like that.
That being said, I’m also a huge fan of French design and I agree that has a little Citröen and/or first gen Ford Taurus in it.

Because this is easy to facelift into an eco-friendly look that completely hides the functional exhaust.
I see more new models with turndowns and vestigial chrome accents where there used to be chrome exhaust tip finishers or those styled surrounds that are integrated into some bumper covers . My theory is that this is manufacturers getting themselves and consumers ready for the look of the zero-emissions future. Ford must be on the fence with this model, and if so this is a smart design for them.

It is more expensive to have two injection systems, but it also makes the engine more reliable as you don’t have carbon buildup on the valves, not to mention cleaner running. I found an article where the manufacturers were debating putting a particulate filter onto gas engines to capture the soot, with the resulting systems needed to do regens like on diesels, i have to imagine the cost isn’t far off.
