Every car show has that one asshole Boomer who makes it impossible to photograph their car because they cover it up with a mini shrine of awards, magazine article clippings, scale models, movie posters, etc.
Some random photo I found on Instagram
And they usually open the hood to show off the engine that nobody cares about, spoiling the lines of the car.
And even if you are opportunistic and try to get a photo before they assemble the shrine, they immediately hop out of the car and spend 45 minutes polishing it with a rag before parking their ass in a lawn chair so they’re always in the background of your shot.

I don’t see how putting photos and awards around your own car makes you an asshole. Smug, sure. But I think asshole is a bit harsh

I’ve been to enough car shows in my life that I think it’s cool to have a scale model to match the show car and it’s probably inevitable that someone maybe the owner of said show car will be in the picture. So what?! If all that makes you unhappy then go to a different show or don’t go at all.

I think it’s people like that, that make me not want to visit antique car shows with my truck. I get enough of it at gas stations, “ ayyy what year is that cool i had one just like it well actually it was my uncles and it was a 77 chevy and it was black but yeah the same truck cool how much ya paid fer it”
Yeah, nope

Your take is bad and you should feel bad about it.
Unless he’s put up a tent and is charging $ 15 a pic, the awards and what not are part of the car’s history , and add to the story .

‘Zactly, especially for something like the Lotus sub (yes, it’s stock photo, not the point). I love seeing the photos documenting major restos of rare cars like that posed with the final product .

I feel like the millenial version of this would be printing off the Wikipedia article on the car as well as a few forum threads and taping them to the front.

I’m also usually uninterested in having a pudgy middle aged man with branded tshirt tucked into demin shorts with sneakers in any of my car photos either.
but I guess car shows can’t allocate an individual field with autumnal foliage backdrops to each car
etc.

Reminds me, i was at a C&C and there was a Camero ZL1 1LE with some interesting aero bits. He had his hood open, so I go take a peek.
Stock LT4, reasonably clean. I mean, why bother? We can all google what it looks like in 20 seconds. Rather have the nice lines for the photo with the hood down.

No, Millenials don’t have printers. We just leave the car undecorated and go look at other cars. If someone’s interested in our car , we expect them to type “white car with fins” into google, find 300K results within seconds, and read up about it later if they ’re interested.

I’ve gotten the same conversations when out on any of my old motorcycles. “I had the same bike! Except it had 2 extra cylinders and 20 0 less CCs and was made by honda” etc. One person will be like “those were fast bikes” and another “oh that model was a pig”.

Giant airbrushed signs are the worst.
( Sir, you own a white base model C5 Corvette with half a JC Whitney catalog thrown at it, no one gives a solitary fuck.)

A friend and I thought about doing this with my Saturn as an elaborate joke.
1 of 94,034 made
1 of 42,865 in tan
Touted as the most boring car made in the late 1990s by Jeremy Clarkson.
We decided that it probably would have coast more to print the sign at Kinko’s than the car was worth.

Many years ago I took my ‘78 Nova to a pretty big-deal car show in the area (they close off an entire block of downtown and have the show there). I didn’t wash it, or lean the junk out of it. So I made a sign for the window with a sharpie that read “Please D on’t To uch. You’ll get dirty.” Neither the sign or the car endeared me to anyone.
The pic makes it looks way nicer than it was.
I regret not taking it back the next year after its transformation.

So you take your car to a show, it lasts 2-3 hours, you walk around once or twice killing maybe half the time. What else are you going to do but sit by your car. I like it when the owner is nearby if I have questions about the car. I figure a photo op is a privilege, not a right.
But I am not so much into the build a shrine to my car at the show thing.

Oh but the build thread, that’s a good point. Lots of people have like, 10 pics of their restoration, or of their house being built. But a build thread is like a novel.

I’d say that there are a great many things you can do with your car that make you an asshole. But turning up to a show so people can see your car and not quite letting them get flawless pics isn’t really one of them.
Its pretty vain but

Years ago I had a ‘69 Stingray roadster, and would be approached by folks at the gas station often. I didn’t mind talking about the car, even if it was usually the same questions. That’s part of owning a cool & interesting car I guess.

A few years ago I was at a car show, and some dude had entered his brandy-new Camaro SS that he’d just taken delivery of three days before. It looked weird parked among 60s and 70s Camaros, but whatev..

I don’t really see the problem with this. If something is in the way, why not refocus on the details, like fins, the c-pillar, and the slats?
Actually a great shot would be right behind the tail
l
ights looking over the side of the car toward the front, so you could get that body line and the fins!
I’d even take very low picture looking up to the front of the car with the awards in the foreground. Sometimes limitations force you to be a little more creative.
