Seriously thinking about it. Don’ t know how it would be received though. But you never do with stuff like that.

Very true & I do. But tha t’ s just my opinion on it.
Explorer/Aviator : Badge engineering
Supra/Z4: Platform sharing.
Lets discuss!

All it costs is time and whatever power draw your equipment drains. Regardless of their pay structure, they can’t take views away from you. Or as the former owner of a company I worked for used to say “They can’t eat you!”
Admittedly, if your time is better served elsewhere there might be a legit reason not to, but only because you’re replacing it with something that will garner more value.
Otherwise, as JimZ says, why not? I’ve thought about it myself twice or seven.

your two examples are no different. They’re both different top hats and interiors on a common platform and powertrain. The Z4/Supra have different sheetmetal above the floorpan, and so do the Explorer/Aviator.
This is badge engineering:
literally no differences other than some trim pieces.

I sortof kindof have a Youtube channel I sporadically post things to for fun, but I don’t really go at it a la Hubnut or others because I sadly don’t have the time. Most of my videos are just driving videos or examples of idiocy I see so far...

Good point. But its not taking time away from anything else. Just thought it would be fun to do. I might have to look into it and make a few videos and see how it pans out.

Like I mentioned earlier. Its still badge engineering. They just have gotten better at it/hide it better. Explorer and Aviator literately almost have the exact dimensions, and share the same engine and option packages (though they have different hybrid engines). Same vehicle, just hiding it better. They got smart and actually started trying to make the vehicles different.
Same thing with the last gen Honda Civic Si and the Acura ILX, Ford Taurus/Lincoln MKS, Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade, Charger/300, Sonata/Optima etc. Its all over. Its just not as blatant as before.

I would do stuff like that. A dashcam is good to have because I see some crazy shit and Im like damn I wish I wouldve filmed that.

Yup! They are also nice to just record interesting drive videos on! :)
I also periodically grab screencaps from mine of interesting vehicles I’ve seen if I don’t have time to get a better pic with my phone or if I’m driving!

I’ll be honest, my videos aren’t the best, but people still like them. I shoot them mostly in one take with my phone (with muffled sound thanks to the Lifeproof), but I’ve been gaining more subscribers now than I did when I truly cared about YouTube.

Some dealers let pre-pubescent kids film decent 20-minute tours & start up the cars. When I look back, it’s kind of wild, but it’s easy to jump in. I rarely do it, but my Nissan dealer down here is nice and personable.

If only I were that young. Ill have to let some feelers out with some dealers to see what I can do.

Just DO IT! I have been running a modest YouTube channel for years and it is honestly the best hobby in the world. Have driven some pretty awesome cars too courtesy of the DFW car community.

I find the thing that well-received stuff tends to have in common is that people kept on doing it regularly. If both helps build your audience and it will naturally improve as you figure more stuff out.

Too cool. Thanks. I really want to. I subscribed to you by the way.
How do you go about getting cars to review?

As strange as it sounds, owners tend to come to me now. And it comes in waves. I just enjoyed the wave of a lifetime, and filmed reviews back to back just about ever weekend for 6 in a row. Now it is quiet again. And every time I think there will be no more cars to review someone else steps up and offers me a car to review. I really hope it never stops.
I started reviewing my own car and some friends cars, then someone with a 300 SRT8 stepped up and wanted me to review his. And after that the floodgates sorta opened. I can’t rely on subscriber count, if you are a big YouTuber people are more likely to let you review their cars, so word of mouth ended up being my best friend. I have reviewed an EG hatch for instance, and then I snapped a picture of an NSX on the road, posted to my instagram and said that it would be a car I would love to review someday. The guy with the EG tagged an NSX owner and the following weekend we shot a review on a 1991 NSX. Crazy stuff.
Another example of that was a Foxbody, who’s friends with someone that has a 1969 Mach 1. Long story short: Ended up reviewing the Mach 1 the weekend after shooting the Fox. Nuts. Absolutely nuts.
The key is to let people know you are interested, show people what you do but never push for it. It has to come natural. I will keep doing this thing till either I can no longer do it or the DFW car community no longer lets me review their cars.

Damn that really is amazing. Sounds like it just snowballs. I’ll have to let some feelers out on social media then when I get it up and going. Its cool that other car people are willing to let you review their cars. Thanks for the info though its got me excited.
