Sooo, I have been on my parents auto plan since I started driving, im listed as the primary derived for my vehicles and all that and it’s worked out well so far, I just pay my share of the cost. Well apparently GEICO just sent a notice that I’m too risky due to some hefty tickets and that if I don’t show proof of new insurance plan they will cancel my entire families insurance plan. So now I have to find insurance for my self. Do you all have any advice for companies that you recommend? Thanks. Old Bentley for your time.

We require more data. When I was a young driver, I had a 20 year old pick up I bought for $150. It needed brakes, an alternator, a battery, windshield wipers, and a tank of gas to make it roadworthy. All in, I had $300 invested. It was almost $200/mo to insure me. I had no tickets but was 18 and living on my own for the first time. Lots of things change insurance rates. Change those things. Go to traffic school or driver training.

Whatever is cheap. Google and some calls for quotes will resolve this.

Liability only, start not getting tickets.

I used to have the same thing with State Farm as I was on my parents insurance. Eventually I just hopped off and bundled my two cars under a similar policy. Since I am now older than 25 my rates have gone down but will probably spike up again when i take delivery of my Corvette. They have treated me well so far and I have a decent inside perspective on their company since my Aunt currently works for them though she is in a different state. Above all else know what you need to be properly covered. Other than that it is the usual process of shopping around for rates what companies won't gouge you and work best with your needs.

When you’re getting quotes, t hink carefully about the coverage and your deductible. I t’s easy to accidentally quote or buy coverage that doesn’t match your needs , like having w ay too much comprehensive coverage for the value of the car (e.g. $50k in coverage for a car that’s only worth $10k) but not nearly enough for liability/medical (e.g. $20 k in coverage when the bills for a bad accident could easily reach or exceed $100k) . With some insurance companies, having a higher deductible saves a surprising amount on your premiums, as long as you could actually swing the deductible if you needed it.
And if your car isn’t worth very much, consider going without comprehensive coverage. Don’t fore go liability, obviously, and get enough of it.

Y ou might talk to an independent agency, (one that writes some higher risk auto, like Vern Fonk if you have one of those in your area.) They can be helpful explaining everything, (limits, coverages, what you can skip, what you can’t, etc.) Lots of folks lowball their limits then end up bankrupt if they hit a Mercedes, (25k physical damage liability doesn’t go very far anymore...)

Plan on switching insurance every 3 years or so. Pricing is set up so that you pay more for being a loyal customer.
Don’t just get state minimums, as you will end up boned if you actually get into an accident . Target coverages should be $100k / $300k liability, including uninsured/underinsured , $100k property damage, $1k deductible and whatever else is cheap, such as car rental or windshield coverage . This means you’ll be covered for up to $100k per person / $300k per incident worth of injuries , whether the other person in the accident is covered or not. You’re also covered for smashing up to $100k worth of other cars.
Shop around online. Avoid working with an actual person as much as possible. If you are part of a credit union, check with them as sometimes they offer discounts thru partner programs. Also, pay your damn bills, as you credit score will affect your insurance rates.

It won’t be the cheapest, but I’ve been super pleased with State Farm. My family has had them for 20 or so years and have had ~10 claims, all handled well.

Ive been on Allstate for a while and as long as you’re nice to the agent you’ll get perks on your vehicle to lower cost, eg: there’s no way in hell my car as ABS and TCS but those discounts are surely on my bill.
Tailor coverage around you vehicle. Is it a beater you can repair parts on yourself or it's a tank? Go with just liability. My 250 is still getting paid off and I have plenty of money invested in it so it has full coverage. The Sebring? It's been paid off for a long time and if someone totals it my dash cam will take em to court and I'll get what I can since it only has liability on it.

How do you know this?
I assume you’re in the industry? You write as though you are. I’m not surprised that they’re not looking out for my interests. Just something I did not know.

Nope, just shop insurance every year after being with an agent for forever that was totally screwing me . Search the googles for “auto insurance price optimization” and learn about their pricing practices .

I’m an insurance agent and I recommend staying away from Geico and other non - standard companies like The General . Bristol West, Progressive, Safeco and Nationwide are all pretty good with a lot of tickets, and they’re all standard companies that will take care of you if something happens.

Stat e farm drops price the longer you have your car on them. Had a Volvo on them so long it was under $400/year...as a newly post grad. But if you get a new old car....like a 20 year old crapcan, it’ll be pricy until a few years go by. Just how they operate.
Geico I dumped as I think they use your credit or something. Bought a house and they doubled my rate for no reason. Canned em.

I’ve been with Geico since I’ve had my own policy, right around this time in 2013. When I was looking at quotes for the M3, they were half of what everyone else was. I’ve shopped around about once a year since then and they still have the best price, albeit just a few dollars cheaper.
