Windsor Mccay was such an insanely talented artist.

I need to take a much deeper dive into this. I stumbled across it after I made a post about Maurice Sendak’s In The Night Kitchen , and learned that it was this comic that inspired Sendak’s work. Apparently, McCay was also extremely influential in his breaking away from the standard comics format of the day, something that Bill Watterson is also known for. Although Watterson did it so the Sunday papers wouldn’t drop the top line of his comic.

His work is incredible. It’s either in Dear Mr. Watterson or Stripped, but in one of those two docs, they visit this place that houses lots of original artwork. His are huuuuuuuge. So amazing to see.
He, along with Alex Raymond
a nd Frank Frazetta are my largest influences.

I absolutely love that genre of art. I fell in love with it the same time I discovered Tolkien. I recently watched Wizards for the first time in many years. It was a staple in the midnight movie rotation at the local cinema. I was usually in a somewhat altered state of mind when I saw it. And, of course, there was Elinore.

Now I’m searching Frazetta’s work. Damn.

He was just a tad talented. A crazy thing about him is that all his painting were completed in a few hours and with no reference. My family spent the day with the Brothers Hildebrandt when I was a kid and they told us how in awe and rare that was.
I actually lived right near him and only found out after he died that my bosses family were family friends and I probably could’ve met him.
