There are a lot of good covers of this song, but this is one of my favorite.

But yes, an animal showing a clear yearning for some maternal affection that he missed and likely caused him to be the dysfunctional beast we love is haunting .

I have a deep love for all things Muppet, and do enjoy seeing them humanized as well. I just wish they’d done the modern Muppet show better.
