I’m going to Japan again in March. Any car-related stuff in Tokyo, Kyoto, and maybe Osaka I shouldn’t miss, other than the very enjoyable car-spotting?

Here’s a neat Toyota Sera for your trouble.

I’ll always recommend Fun2Drive’s afternoon tour if you can stomach the price (budget ~$450 USD for one of their lower-cost cars) and distance from Tokyo (~2 hours bus each way). There are some shorter / less expensive / less driving-intensive options available as well. The tour guidance is great, especially if you haven’t driven in Japan before and those mountain roads are hard to beat. I’ve done it twice so far, with write-ups here and here .

Spoon’s TYPE ONE shop is easy to reach while in Tokyo (15 min. train + 20 min. walk from Shinjuku) and they’re generally cool with visitors.

Akihabara UDX ’s Parking Garage - Interesting things tend to show up in this shopping center’s basement parking garage, especially on the weekends. Definitely worth a walk-through if you’re ever in the area.

That’s unfortunately all I’ve got for now due to some scheduling limitations during previous visits, but these have also been on my radar for a while:

Daikanyama meet-ups (Tokyo) - Think cars and coffee, but with even more classic/rare/exotic Japanese and European vehicles in attendance.

Omoshiroi Rentacar (multiple locations) - for standard rentals of fun cars.

Various manufacturer museums/factories: Megaweb Toyota ( Tokyo ), NISMO Omori ( Yokohama ), Mazda ( Hiroshima ), Subaru ( Gunma ), etc.

Bingo Sports ( Tokyo ) - High-end used car sales. No shortage of eye candy on display at any given time.

Daikoku Parking Area ( Tokyo ) - Busy car meet spot on the weekends. Seems easiest to visit if you have your own rental.

Well they sure blurted out a list, if you go to Odaiba and the Toyota Megaweb, there is also a car museum in that huge mall building that rotates cars, race cars too.

And Re: Megaweb, if you get your International Driving Permit, you can take a few laps in a new Toyota of your choice. I tried out a Crown Majesta, Hiace, and Alphard when I went in 2017.
