...until next time, we’ll be back after these short messages.

Wonder what reaction he is going to get from his diehards for “giving up and losing to the libs” now?

Seriously. He’s basically exactly where he was 35 days ago – agreeing to a temporary funding of government, and his pet project will be negotiated separately. We really could’ve done without all the people having to work without pay or being furloughed not knowing whether they will be paid – along with all the people receiving government services affected too.

I’m glad the furloughed workers will be getting back pay – it’s absolutely the right thing to do, but now is an added expense to the tax payers as well because now we’re paying out money for which they didn’t provide any services. Fiscal conservatism at its finest, folks! Leave it to the Republicans to show us time and time again.

He won’t declare an emergency “at this time.” He now has three weeks.

I know, I know. We could be looking at a 100 day shutdown next time. I’m just relieved that 800K federal workers can sleep a little easier tonight and there is no wall, for now . We’re all just living...

Didn’t some work without pay? I’m thinking anyone who didn’t jump ship already should get retention bonuses or something. It’s way more expensive to backfill the ranks.

Wonder what reaction he is going to get from his diehards for “giving up and losing to the libs” now?

They’ll say he’s a genius for getting the government reopened in spite of those evil “ Demoncrats” .

He’ll be able to deliver his State of the Union and if in three weeks he doesn’t get his wall (he won’t) he’ll call a national emergency to get it. Oh, then he’ll call Democrats hypocrites for supposedly negotiating in bad faith*. Of course, this all ignores the fact that Trump is the king of bad faith negotiations...

*Democrats said “reopen the government and we will then talk about this wall you want”.

Yeah folks who were considered “critical” had to work without pay, and the rest were on furlough meaning you’re not fired - you still have your job, but the office is closed so we don’t need you to work.

Both sides have agreed to give these folks backpay as well as overtime pay they would’ve otherwise earned if they had been working - which again I have no problem with, it’s the right thing to do for these people who didn’t ask for any of this. It’s just bad management of the government’s budget still though as we are paying the same money as tax payers but receiving less for it.

This is disappointing, but understandable. Gotta get the IRS running for tax returns to start, as well as making sure air traffic controllers & the TSA get back to work, and government security measures around the Super Bowl are in place.

My money is on the goddam obstructionist losers on the D side of the House continuing to block everything they can, so it will prob shut down again in 3 wks.

Get your taxes filed early if you’re getting a return!

It’s true it could come back. But he’s lost once, he’s not going to have any more leverage if he tries the same thing again. He might be able to benefit from trying his emergency declaration, but ever day he waits makes it more clear to everyone how fraudulent his emergency would be.

Regardless, better to be off for a month, on for three weeks, and than off again than to have a continuous furlough. This should provide enough time to pay the federal workers for January, which means they will be recapitalized before the end of this temporary agreement, which should make things less dire if we are shut down again in March.

No federal employees worked without pay, they just worked with delayed pay.

The shut down cost the country $7.1 billion dollars.

Technically I believe furloughed workers are simply being asked to stay home because there is no essential work for them to do. Congress needs to go in after the fact, as they’re doing now to approve back pay for them.

In any case, you and I are making the same point - this is costing tax payers a lot of money. We’re paying these peoples’ salaries, as we should, while their work was at a complete standstill.

When a toddler throws a temper tantrum, you can’t give in and give them what they want, or else they learn they can successfully throw a tantrum any time they want something.

I’m glad this toddler didn’t get his way. Thank you to the federal employees that put up with this bullshit for over a month for the good of the country.

...not in the long run if you set that kind of precedence with a maniac like him . And the $5.7 is only a fraction of what the project will cost, total estimates are well over $20B.

You seem to be trying to be shifting the blame here by suggesting that the president should just get whatever he wants with co-equal branches of government just bending to his will.

You do know that it was the president who changed his mind about the spending bill a month ago after listening to conservative pundits. The bill passed both houses, the president said he’d sign it, and then flip flopped.

How does his obsession with the media and subsequent veto suddenly become “ Democratic obstructionism” ?
