Kinja'd!!!

I’ve done 17 Chicago winters in 2wd trucks, so I consider four wheel drive a luxury. My first four of those winters were in an S-1o on all season tires (I had no idea snow tires were a thing back then), and it even had an open rear differential. I loved hooning that thing around in the snow , and I only needed assistance twice. It needed one pull out when I buried it up to the frame in a snow-drift, and I once had to have a couple passers by give my a little push to get out of a parking spot that was a giant lumpy sheet of ice.

My Sierra has a locking diff, and for the last 6 or 7 years I even started putting snow tires on it. When the weather is nasty, we don’t take my wife’s AWD CX-5 on all seasons, we take my 2wd truck on snow tires . Now, to be honest, I did get it stuck once in very muddy grass when I had those horrible Firsetone Destination LE tires on it (great on dry or wet pavement, worse than Uniroyal Tiger Paws in the snow), but I have never ever needed assistance in snow or ice.

So imagine my surprise when I go to leave for school this morning, and my truck will not move one inch. I tried rocking back and forth, nothing. I figured a lump of slush came dislodged and had basically cho ked one of the front wheels, but nope. That’s when I realized I could not turn the steering wheel either. The slush I had parked in last night had frozen solid when the temperature crashed, and basically glued my front tires to the ground in ice.

Fortunately my wife heard me spinning my tires, and came out to help. She tried pushing while I worked the gas, but that didn’t work either. We switched places, and we were able to ease it out. The whole ordeal took five minutes, so it wasn’t a big deal, but yeah, that was unexpected.

That’s hilarious in an “I’m glad it wasn’t me” sort of way. I thought for a sec you were going to say you had to get a heater and melt the ice.

4WD luxury!?!?! That’s blasphemy, you clearly haven’t lived in a southern state where you need 4WD in case it’s a bit chilly outside or if the mall is the destination.

Oof, that’s a new one on me.

And next week promises to be worse, temperature wise.

Ha! Around here, people just assume my truck is 4wd, because they all are (except for fleet work trucks). Give me empty roads and 6" of snow, and I cou ld go have fun for hours.

Yeah, this isn’t going to be a fun week.  Now that its frozen I’ll be able to get in and out just fine.

Yeah, it won’t melt and refreeze any time soon.

We escaped this week, and are in Florida. Land back home Saturday night. Not looking forward to that.

The only time I've gotten my truck stuck was when the water main broke, I parked in the puddle and it froze over night. In addition to cars driving by, I had ice up to the hubs on the left side and up to the bottom of the rim on the right side. I had to chip out the hubs but couldn't get out because of the open diff. I had to get towed out of the hole.

I thought a car being frozen to the ground was a myth!!

I found the ice somewhat useful in parking that GSX1100G. Due to the snow in my parking space, the bike’s porky 630lb weight, and my weak butt, I couldn’t park the bike well enough in my space to also fit my car . Well, ice kicked up the kickstand and I very nearly dropped it trying to put it on the stand that totally wasn’t down anymore. While picking it up the rear tyre started sliding and that’s how I got a genius idea:

I wheeled it about to where I wanted it to be parked then grabbed the grab bar in the back. I then easily walked it into place. :D

I had that happen once. I kept stalling and couldn’t figure out why. I panicked for a moment then realized my tires were frozen in place. I don’t remember  how I got out but I think I just dumped the clutch and that broke it free

That’s the b iggest disadvantage of driving an automatic in the snow, I don’t have the option of popping the clutch.

I also had the advantage of full time AWD. So it didn’t mater which wheels were frozen

Cat litter is your friend in these situations. I’ve gotten out of several jams by packing a little under the tires as best as possible then a small trail in the direction you are going. It was on y list of winter necessities before I moved to a place that doesn’t have winter. Glad you got it free! Your students would have hated to have a sub for the day ;)

If pushing it hadn’t worked, or if my wife hadn’t been home, I would’ve busted out the kitty litter.

I didn’t get stuck to the ground, but I did have a little winter fun this morn which did make me a minute late for work. I went to open the sliding door to get my ice scraper but the door wouldn’t budge. With a conventional door it’s easy to pull to free them, but sliders don’t pull out too far.

I guess I'll leave the scraper in the front from now on...

If it was, I’d buy the poster. I almost bought the poster anyways, but I really don’t have anywhere to hang it. I mean, it’s an early Squarebody with two-tone paint and dog dish hubcaps ... IT WAS MADE FOR ME!
