The dealer threw up the white flag. They contacted VW corporate and requested a buy back, so the end may be near for me and the GTI. I’m kind of sad. It’s been by far my favorite car I’ve ever owned, problems be damned. When I had it, it was absolutely perfect at everything it did. That all being said, as much as I want another one, I believe I’m going to attempt to be smart and take this as a chance to get out of debt. So no more GTI for me, probably. I’m going to miss it, but I guess I’m going to find out what being stranded often feels like until I figure out a cheaper replacement. Don’t worry Daender, I feel like this will drag on past the weekend, so we’ll still likely have the Tiguan.

Sorry to hear that you have to let go of the car. So what now? Another hatch? (You could always buy the Oppo Car of the year 2019 Honda Fit) Or something different?

Damn, not the ending we wanted. But using the opportunity to rid one's self of debt... An impressive sacrifice.

I dunno. As much as I dislike the FA20, the FRS piques my interest. That being said, I don’t think I can get past the engine. Miata crosses the mind, but I don’t think I could live with a convertible. Most realistically though, a MS3.

Yep, if this pans out, I’ll end out further ahead than before I got rid of the Fiesta, so it may end up way better in the end. As long as I can be rational.

That sucks, but honestly probably best to be rid of it given their incompetence.
And if it fits your finances better the n that’s all the better that you have that opportunity, you can still get something fun for a lot less than a new car.

Ah rip dude. I remember when you bought it and I saw how happy you were with it. I feel secondhand disappointment for you. What are you looking for in your next car, maybe I can try to help you with that, no Fit jokes this time :)

Well you could be like me: have automotive goals so low that they’ll be easily achievable, and you’ll have a little more money in the savings account every month.

Should be a quick transaction given the amount of experience VW has at buying back cars.

What about Civic Si? or a WRX? used MS3s , depending on which generation you’re looking at are not exactly reliable you know,...
If you’re O K with sacrificing some speed and handling Elantra Sport GTs are selling for cheap. Seems like a good overall package, no GTI replacement tho.

Maybe Mazdaspeed3, but I dunno. I may just suffer with the 4Runner for a while. It kind of presents an opportunity for me to kind of, well, pack up and leave if I want. It gives me a freedom that I haven’t had in a while.

I’ve driven one, and I found the steering to be unforgivably bad. Most of the MS3's common issues are preventable or have likely been remedied by now, so I’m not super worried about it.

Any idea of what I should expect? The service adviser told me it would likely be what I’ve paid back to me, and pay the rest off to the bank? Should there be more compensation for not having my car for a month?

With equal tires they run with GTI’s all day in terms of handling.

SVT Focus. Cheap, disposable, and dependable (for a 15 year old car). But they weigh as much as a FiST and have near the same power from an NA motor. Also, they come in 3-door form.
If you don’t get this then at least be cool and get a volvo 262c Bertone to have a cool, yet slow, fleet.

At least get a motorcycle then. Not even a particularly fast one, just something simple for fuel savings that make priuses feel deep shame while also enjoying your commute.

As sketchy as the 4Runner is, it has been more reliable than any Volvo we ever owned, while being older in relation to when they were owned.

Without writing a whole memo, there are a couple possible approaches—a strict lemon law calculation based on mileage and expected useful life, something based on resale value, or possibly something designed to bail you out of a loan. Depends somewhat on the state, the situation, and what they’re trying to accomplish by buying you out, such as keeping you as a potential customer vs. avoiding a lawsuit.
Off the top of my head I have no idea of a dollar amount for a GTI but depending on where you live I’d expect to get less than new MSRP but more than the retail value of a comparable (but, you know, functional) used example, so that you would come out ahead for your trouble if you wre to go out and buy a more functional example of the same car as the one you sold back. The law usually recognizes the utility you got out of driving it , but also the inconvenience of the repairs and repurchase process . It does not always do a good job of compensating the frustration aspect.
I’m not your lawyer, this is not legal advice, I’m not advertising, etc.—I’m j ust a guy on the internet who has seen numerous similar transactions take place.

Step up to the plate and get the truest sleeper of sleepers in the quality/good car department - Suzuki Kizashi. Supposedly really good fit and finish and excellent handling but also very robust and economical.

This is an oil leak issue. I shall find out soon enough if it was the car or the dealer. I’m going to flip my lid if it’s something simple like a turbo oil line that they missed.

I feel like this is more of an incompetent dealer situation, but a VW engineer is coming to look at it, so we shall see.
