Raiding my history post ( Cellphones I have owned ):
That HTC was a pretty bad phone in every way other than form-factor. Still have mixed feelings about the S7.

I remember when it was bad-ass to have a slide out keyboard (in a dorky kind of way)

I was never able to use the tiny keyboard well, even the slideout kind. My fingers are just too big. I love the on screen keyboards. I am an iphone guy, but I really like the ‘sliding’ keyboard on some of the androids where you just slide your finger around to create your words - that’s awesome.

Then: Casio g’zone Type V. Still my favorite phone ever.
Now: iPhone SE. The cheapest of iPhones!

In ten years I went from
To
Six times the RAM, three times the camera resolution, four times the screen resolution, and 15 times the CPU performance, yet still a regression in usability, in terms of
both
hardware and software.

Wow did this picture take me back. I had the exact same phone on U.S. Cellular for I think two years in middle school . That thing was a tank. I never used a case on it and dropped it a bunch, but it survived. I remember it feeling pretty high quality for being a cheaper phone too. The slider was very satisfying.

To this day the LG Rumor is one of the best phones I've ever had, for the same reasons you've outlined. It served me faithfully for three years before it died in a tragic accident that was due in no part to any sort of design flaw.

The market was doing some interesting things with phones before the iPhone came in and made everything try to copy it. Palm was way ahead of the curve with their Treo PDA/phone all-in-ones. My sister had the pictured full-qwerty flip phone. At one point I even had a touchscreen slider phone that wasn’t Android. LG had come up with their own OS.

Google's iPhone version of their keyboard has that functionality
