I’ve come across those before, when using google to search for a certain post for instance. Sometimes they also show up with machine translated text to foreign languages

Yup, and it has been mentioned to Kinja support on multiple occasions. They don't seem to care that this site is harvesting all of Kinja.

Yeah it’s been brought up before, but I forgot what the consensus was. Some kind of archival or translation service? Shameless r epost ing for clicks? I dunno, and I can’t seem to find any of those previous discussions when I search Oppo  for “upost” . Maybe try tagging this post “upost” so that next time this subject comes up, we’ll having something to refer back to?

As far as I can tell, they are just stealing posts for free content, probably just to drive some ads (and maybe if they are very clever, some SEO). Presumably they don’t make enough money for anyone to bother to sue them, especially since they probably aren’t in the US.

Yeah that was my guess as well. Seems like a simple DMCA takedown request would be straightforward (the only time I have ever found the DMCA to be useful).  But you’re right, they’d probably just ignore it.
