I was still foolishly hopeful about Elio motors. I wish they would have to put it into production as a motorcycle instead of wasting millions on lobbying.

Sometimes I think products like this are created to pool investor money, pay yourself a high salary for several years , with no real intention of bringing it to market. When the company inevitably folds, you still walk away with millions of dollars.

I’m more sad about the demise of the Aptera:

I’m not. That would never have been in my budget. The Elio was something I could buy brand new as  second car.

I think their real downfall was deciding to make their own engine. Turns out that shit is hard. I do agree that the lobbying, while necessary , should have been done in tandem with the release.

I still think teaming up with for and getting the 1.0 Ecoboost would have been their best bet. If not then maybe one of Japan’s many 660cc Kei Car engines 63hp would have been more than enough.  I’m sure some manufacturer would have been willing to deal.

Yeah they could have very easily sold it in states that don’t have a helmet law. Only 19 states require all riders to wear a helmet. 28 states only require “riders” under 21 to wear one.

To me getting a motorcycle license would be a small price to pay to drive an Elio and get 80mpg. I could for sure see a protein the states that do require a helmet though as that would be a PITA and I’d bet a lot of poeple, myself included couldn’t fit in the “car” with a helmet on. I can barely fit in my e90 with a helmet on.

It seemed like such a simple, and honest design. No crazy styling, no hybrid or electric complication. Just a lightweight little “car” with a simple engine. I remember initially it had the 3 cylinder from a Geo Metro.

I know this kid (well he’s 25), who graduated from Auburn. Right out of school he created a startup for 3D Printing blocks to construct houses. He was able to secure millions from venture capitalists. He’s been paying himself $500k a year, and all he has to show so far is a small office with like 5 employees, a bunch of renderings, and a couple prude prototype blocks. Maybe it will turn into something, but I kind of doubt it. There’s a ton of roadblocks. He’s been living high on the hog, but had he lived modestly he could walk away from the company should it fold and be decently well off. I guess he figures at this point he could go hop around at other startups a year or 2 at a time and make a decent salary even if they never get off the ground.

Don’t woooorrry... it’s coming... Soon. Really!!!

And when it arrives, it will be The Next Big Thing!!!!

Just be patient!

You can reserve yours today!!!

Their website says so! They’ll have funding for production real soon!!!

/jk.

At least they’re still updating their website. Avanti Motor’s website, by comparison, is advertising the new “2007 Avanti Coupe” (and convertible)

https://www.avantimotors.com/avanticoupe.html

And even more sad are the obvious errors in the performance specs for the Ford engine this was supposed to have:

That’s pretty damn clever. I’m 4 years older and my entire income for the last 10 years is less than 500k. Like a lot less.

I hear ya. I just can’t believe people handout their money like that. I’d at least want to see a tiny house made from them , or something other than a couple   1/25th scale blocks and some drawings.

No kidding. I understand the idea of trying to “get in on the ground floor” buy cheap sell high and all that, but you should probably wait until there is some proof that a company is making a viable product.
