One of my favorite songs of all time. Would be my favorite song of that whole era of hip-hop (the whole pre-modern era before Rakim figured out how to make it all work) if it wasn’t for the Superman verse in “Jam On It” by Newcleus.

It’s a fucking amazing track.

Also I’m a huge nerd and a lot of what I love about hip-hop is how unlike pretty much every other genre and subgenre, which have hazy, murky origins that you can’t really definitively go “yes: here’s exactly where it began”, the history of hip-hop is very well chronicled and definitive in how it came to be and how things evolved.

You can debate for the rest of your life about how punk began but with hip-hop it is super-clear, the blackout of ‘77 meant that block parties suddenly had professional soundsystems, DJs started using their record collections to make new music and a name for themselves, MCs would rap along with the DJ to keep the party going, hey everybody look the biggest American contribution to culture since jazz.
