Ended up not going with Turo for our car rental. All the fun options ended up at about 45 or more dollars a day before taxes. The really fin ones like a WRX were almost 70 a day! Got a reservation through Priceline at Sixt “Mercedes C-class or similar” . One thing I like about Sixt is they actually list what “or similar” means. Like their Standard category is “Malibu or similar” but their website shows that the options includes Toyota Camry, Chrysler 300c, and Buick Regal. In my case it’s C-class a CTS or ATS. I was VERY tempted to go one level to the E-class, S90, or V90 ! However I was already spending about 70 bucks more than the “Camry or similar” my wife wanted. O f coarse I reminded my wife that we saved that b y not going out to eat last night.

I ended up paying 163.00 for 5 days with taxes and everything. Not bad. And I’m actually excited about driving either the Benz or the Cadis. Also did you know they still make a CTS? I thought that names died out years ago.

That’s a surprisingly decent price for something way better than a Sentra or something like that (which is what all my rental car experiences end up being like in the US). Report back to Oppo what you actually end up with, and overall experience.

My other rental cars have been a Chevy Cruze and Kia Soul. And I think those ended up about the same price as this. Worth it.

Biggest thing was for this trip I needed a car that would comfortably seat 5. Could have gone with “Malibu or similar” but that’s not fun.

I used Sixt a few years ago in Tampa. They had to shuttle you to their location off-premises, but we got a CLA for less than the hateful Chrysler 200 I had the time before.

Say what you will about the CLA, but it was fine to drive, comfy, the a/c worked nicely, and it held four adults. A nice rental car, at least.

The last car I rented was a manual Jimny, again, off-airport discount place. I got in and realized we were blocked by other parked cars, unless I backed up into a muddy, rutted field. Which, much to my wife’s chagrin, I did with a smile. What a way to start our driving experience in a foreign land, though.

Fair warning, 5 (especially if adults) in that c lass might be tight - especially ATS, which is known to have a very small back seat. But at least you’ll be having fun in the drivers seat! “Sorry honey, rental car insurance only covers when I’m driving!”.

I hope you have better luck with Priceline than I have. The last two hotel rooms I reserved with them were prepaid but the hotel wasn’t notified, and obviously I can’t check out without them having proof of payment so I had to pay again. Then I had to spend weeks calling people who couldn’t help me to refund charges and waiting for the right person to call back.

So  what I mean to say is, good for you if it all works out but also good luck!

Yeah I thankfully passenger number 5 is a 70lb 10 year old. I imagine its about the same size as my E90. I can handle that.

I imagine that did that on purpose . If i found myself in a Jinmy i would take every chance to off-road that i could find.

I dont find sixt to be any different than the other companies, other than they are generally smaller and end up having fewer options because of it. You can find what “or similar” means for other companies but it generally is more convoluted and might not be entirely accurate. The smaller company aspect certainly helps make that list usable though. I’ve rented from them like 3 times and havent found it to really be any different in the end. Just happened to be the cheapest for those trips. Enjoy though, I always enjoy renting cars regardless of it even being a shitty Versa. Just fun to drive stuff with no care in the world about what happens to the car.

I’d like to think so, but this place seemed just a tad disorganized, or else they just didn’t care that I had to back into a ditch to get my car out. I could have asked them to move a car, but this was way more fun (for me at least).

I did take it off-road a little, and very nearly got it stuck in sand a few miles from anything. That would have been... bad. With better tires it would have been fine.

tires are one thing i’ m a bit worried about with this rental. they probably have run flats which in my experience are junk in the snow . Which is why I have snow tires on my car

You have to be careful with what rental companies deem to be ‘equivalent’, even when dealing with their Premier department . In my case, they offered me a Mitsubishi Diamante as the equivalent of my 5-series. Uh, no - about the same size perhaps , but that’s about it. What would I have received if I needed a replacement for the 968 - a Camaro?

USAA has discounts with Hertz, Enterprise, Avis and Budget. 99% of the time my discount with Budget ends up being the cheapest option. Every once in a while it’s not and I go through Hotwire. I also don’t care about having anything fancy so I just usually get a “full size” (a.k.a. actually a midsize) sedan unless it’s much cheaper to go for one of the 3 categories for compact sedans, none of which are named compact: midsize, standard, and intermediate.

163USD out the door for a C-class for 5 days?? W o w . Priceline must have some mad discounts. I just paid 494CAD for 7 days in a Wrangler, with the AAA discount and a Hertz Gold membership...

From what I’ve heard about Canadian auto insurance rates I’m GWU’s song that has something to do with it. Also from what I’ve seen Wranglers are heckin expensive to rent.
