I drive an RS and really enjoy it. It’s underrated as a fun cheap economy car, but rightly overshadowed by real hot hatches.
I’ll miss the small car segment more that this model specifically.
If it had gotten GMs 2.0 turbo like it should have it probably would have been a different story.

I drove one for work. For all its shortcomings, it’s a good car. I’ll miss it.

I hate seeing more and more small
cars disappearing with Crossovers taking their place... :(

So then no more getting stuck behind them doing 84kmph on the highway? The best part about them is being
subcompact you don’t need much of a passing lane to get by.

It’s a 1.4 turbo, right?
I wonder what that same engine would be like in a Locost/Exocet.

I’m more OK with those because they’re really just cars with a slight lift and plastic cladding...
If somebody gave me a 4x4 Panda, I’d be happy as a clam :P

Yeah, 1.4T.
Honestly, it would probably be pretty tame. The engine’s got great mid-range punch, but quickly runs out of breath above 5500. It probably be very cheap to buy/fix/replace though since it was so common. The early RS models (despite people saying they are only appearance packages) had a unique close-ratio transmission that pairs perfectly with the small turbo engine. That’s where the fun comes from.
The Sonic was one of the first modern subcompacts in the US with a turbo as a normal engine option. It was best in class when it debuted but was quickly overshadowed by more modern turbos with direct injection.
From what I can tell, it can’t really be modded much over 180-200hp without going crazy with $ either. That said, in the Sonic, despite my hard driving, I cannot get less than 29mpg on a tank, so that’s nice haha

honestly, I liked the first gens headlights and thought they were decent for what they were. I liked it over the Fiesta. I think they should have called it a Chevette though and done a more traditional gauge cluster (even though I liked the moto appearance) and it would been more than a car you can market to young people.
Sure, the Chevette wasn’t awesome, but what was then in that range? If domestic car makers would make cars nice enough to keep a legacy name they’d do better IMO. Corolla’s, Accord’s, 3 series, E Class etc. etc. Most of those sold are previous owners of the same thing.

Ok I might actually need you to explain the joke to me. Cuz I was just trying to mix a Sonic the hedgehog reference with a little “ thanks Obama” . Does this joke work on more levels than I intended?

I could see you going for a yellow or orange one.
I’m more inclined to the Vauxhall Adam Rocks Air.

A bit bigger segment but I keep thinking my next car could be a Mini Countryman S. Want I want is an AWD, Manual, Wagon or hatch, with a decent amount of power, for less than 30 grand. New ones are way over that price but 2-3 Years Old they can be found for about 27.

First gen? Yes. I thought it looked good in the ninghties and I still think it looks good. Certain trims were very popular for autoX and road racing too because hey were light, had a good suspension, and were cheap. Dodge even sold a racer spec car with the twin cam engine, upgraded suspension and no frills. No power steering, no a/c no power windows, you could even get it without a radio.

That’s still really not bad sounding. I think part of the appeal of a small engine like that is that you can absolutely thrash it, and still not be at risk of breaking the law. You know, the whole “it’s more exciting to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow” thing. I wonder what transmissions it could be bolted up to.

Oh yeah I totally get slow- car- fast, that is exactly why I bought this car (also got a crazy deal on it) check out my username ;)
R eally it’s the short/close ratio transmission that brings the Sonic RS to life exactly like you said. You have to shift like crazy to keep that thing moving haha
I laugh when some sports cars get to 60mph in first gear, while my Sonic red lines in first at 25mph haha Normal driving I pretty much always pull away in 2nd.
When I pull out of my driveway in the morning, I literally shift to second before I get to the curb.
All these enthusiast want power and speed, but cars are so fast now you cant fully enjoy them on public roads. W hat they REALLY want is t he FEELING of power and speed. That way everything stays legal while you bang the car through 3 gears at WOT only to reach 60mph haha
