While bored this morning I decided to look see what’s out there for donors for the Ruckus engine swap project . What I found made me stop in my tracks...
The most logical donor is this 250cc Chinese scooter
It appears to be using a Reflex or Helix clone engine and is already in pieces. Have my friend do the structural welds where necessary then I’ll have fun putting the rest together like moto Lego.
An alternative would be to go two stroke with this roughed up DT1 75. I studied how someone stuffed a GSX-R engine into a Ruckus and doing it with a tiny displacement bike would be much easier. In fact, it would actually be even easier than swapping in another scooter engine. Downside here is that since it’s a kick start I have no idea how that would even work outside of extending the kick start bar past the frame of the Ruckus.
While I was doing all that, I ran into this weird gem:
I couldn’t understand what I was seeing and had to message the seller.
It’s a ZX6 with a ZX10 engine. Apparently second gear jammed during his commute and it’s been parked ever since. It starts and runs but if you try to use second the trans locks up. Just ...holy crap a 600 class bike with a 1000 engine? This has gotta be like strapping oneself to a rocket, right?

I mean....its just a 1000 after that. not much different to the regular 1000s. and the 1000 of THAT day and age werent great (now that i think about it, the zx-10R didnt even exsist then, it was the 900.

I wonder if a newer engine was used? Apparently the guy that built it dropped it then sold it to the current owner, who was riding when 2nd grenaded. At least the seller isn’t like the typical Illinois/Wisconsin motorcycle seller who thinks that having a customized bike means it’s worth $10k.

It’s an older liter bike . They ain’t that phenomenal. I mean, hell, even I felt like I could safely ride a Hurrycane.
But we all know the real answer is to put a Honda CB 750 in it.

The nice thing about scooter drivetrains is that they all have the whole assembly in the swingarm. Doing a motorcycle swap tends to require a LOT of custom fab work. I designed the backbone of a ninja 300 swap into my ruckus but abandoned the project when I saw the scope compared to a real scooter swap.
I also took a page out of your book... acquiring projects in 2019 is going to be easy AF

I need a guru. I have an 1987 honda nq50i spree iowa edition. It has sat drained for the last 17 years. It was my grandpa’s and i would like to get it up and running again. But.... i know shit about mopeds or 2 stroke and am kinda stopped by a lack of confidence in my ability and a fear of destroying something of sentimental value. Any advice?

Ooh scoots are probably the easiest things to going! :)
First thing I’d do is flash a light into the tank and make sure it’s clean. If that looks good I’d move on to seeing if it’ll start. Since it’s a two stroke there are a couple paths to take for fueling:
1. Put two stroke oil into the oil injection system.
2. Mix two stroke oil into 32 parts of gas per 1 part of oil. Put this into the fuel tank.
I would say do both for the first start. If the scooter was drained the carb could be in good enough shape to start/run . I usually connect my battery, shoot some starting fluid into the carb, then try to start!
If it doesn’t run, you’d want to either clean the carb or buy a new one. Considering scooter carbs are only like $20 overnight from Amazon just buy new ones.
Once it is running, disconnect the output hose from the oil injection system and see if any oil comes out. It should be a slow leak of oil. If it works, no need to mix oil and gas! If it doesn’t, you’ll need to fix the injection system or just run out/fuel mix in the tank.
If it works and you just want to do a tank mix anyway, make sure you reroute the oil injection outlet into the inlet.
Final note: Being an Iowa Edition, your scooter is extremely rare. Working against the rarity is that the Iowa models have a lower top speed than the rest of the Sprees at 25mph. To get true top speed (35-40 mph) you’ll want to replace the carb, exhaust, and gearing with that of a normal Spree. Also, since these are fixed gear they aren't easy to hot rod.

Noted! Yeah, the two stroke swap didn’t appear too bad. Looked a lot like weld engine mounts (which could be made from existing steel from the donor bike) then weld in the rear spring mounts . Why I called it easier is because the two stroke is air cooled and has basically no wiring to get tangled up with?
And awesome!!!! What’s the green stuff on the hitch?

The electrics are definitely easier, but things like designing a swingarm, finding a place for the motor/chain/shifting hardware make it quite a challenge. Usually for scooter engine swaps it ends up just needing custom motor mounts and the wiring from the donor bike.
The green is a green/black pearl colorshift paint. Had some on the shelf, figured why not?

The good news is, the only difference that i know of between a 50 and a 50i is a small restriction in the exhaust to limit output.
