Beautiful (over)restoration on BAT right now.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Recently there was an Icon FJ40 on BAT that got bid up to $130,000 - and did not meet reserve. Which I find interesting. Internet knowledge proclaimed that a second hand Icon would surely go for more money than a new one ordered from Ward, since the waiting list is so long and demand is so high. Doesn’t seem to be the case in reality.
Then this wonderful example shows up. I doubt it will reach 130K because people with that much money to blow rarely have a shred of taste. But I’m very interested in seeing what it does bring, because work this nice is rare, and this is a desirable model. It’s already
been bid past 40K, which seems to be around where the nicest examples of old cruisers top out at.
That and look at it. The details on this thing are amazing. And the owner converted it back to 3 on the tree. Of course done this well, and this clean, its not likely to see much dirt or any trails in the future, I think.

45's are so cool. Looks like this guy did the real deal on this one. Looks phenomenal . though I can’t say I love the idea of a period battey, but whatever, Im sure it will work fine as often as this will be used.
I watched the linked video and I thought “what would it be like to drive a 3 speed, that must be so weird” then I realized that its like like a 4 speed is all that different. I would bet this 45 has pretty close power to weight as mine.

he does quality work, but some of his decisions make me cringe. those headlights he puts in are the worst. I don’t care if the factory units are no better than hurricane lanterns, at least they don’t look like glass zits.

Just bigger “gaps” between the gear ratios. Not much of an issue in an
era of little traffic and low-compression “luggable” engines. Funny to think that in the 1950's, four speeds were considered sporty.

ICON is and always has been pure fucking bullshit overhyped by a bunch of ignorant bros that wouldn’t know a properly engineered solution if it was dropped on their skull.
And no. They don’t do especially high quality
work either. Their work is shit.

I will stack my portfolio against theirs any day of the week. I’m not some hack only in it for the money.
But w hoever restored this Toyota was beyond obsessive . Mopar-level obsessive. I would not be at all shocked if they spent weeks researching the exact orange peel the paint should have. Sadly, they’re selling on BaT, so there is no way they’re recouping even the cost of restoration.

A lot of times cars sell for higher amounts on BAT than they would anywhere else. Of course that doesn’t make restorations any cheaper to perform.
As for Icon, I’ve never really got the appeal of taking everything that makes a classic vehicle “classic” and throwing it in the dumpster. Then
sliding some new dime-a-dozen stuff in, painting it an ugly grey or brown, and charging out the wazoo. All I can say, is if somebody has taste that bad, they deserve to pay for it.
