If every single person went through even the most basic flight training level of work to get a license I am sure they all will.
Sadly there are still people who thinking driving is a right, not a privilege. And with that kind of attitude...

On the surface, checklists are a good idea. The first time my instructor asked me to pull out the landing checklist, I realized there’s no way we could require checklists for everything and everyone. Watching for traffic, listening to the tower, preparing for landing with a checklist in hand, watching my position relative to the runway, radioing the tower, making adjustments to the plane configuration, watching for traffic, turning to crosswind, adjusting the airplane per the checklist, radioing the tower, lining up for final, adjusting the throttle to set the glide path , watching the VASI, adjusting the trim, going out of my mind with all the tasks, trying not to crash, adjusting for crosswind, trying not to crash, flare, flare, flare, is this thing ever going to land?!?, and finally, touchdown....
Yeah, checklists are vital for airplanes, but I wouldn’t want a driver to be given another distraction.

I was referring to checklists help ing pilots remember all the buttons. I agree that they’d not help drivers much. Now, having a requirement that drivers keep current like a pilot would? That I could get behind.

It’s more than the buttons, it’s the procedures. I was thinking of the extra distraction of having the checklist and the procedures that they describe:
Check mirror, left blinker on, adjust speed for traffic, move left to merge...

This is honestly how my older sister drives. Or at least drove... She doesn’t have a car now, and I don’t know if she’s bothering to renew her driver’s license.
But yes, she did brilliantly on her driver’s test because she very obviously did everything she was supposed to do. But being in a car with her...
— Checks mirrors [spends about five seconds not looking ahead because she spent over a second in each mirror]... All clear.
—left blinker turns on, [allows five flashes before moving on ] gap in traffic located is now closed because she waited too long.
—shoulder checks to attempt to locate another gap. Stabs brakes to slow down to get into it, then jerky swerve-swerve lane change, or else has not located gap and runs out of merge lane, and stabs brakes; either way traffic behind is furious.
That’s not even the process you should really be using to merge, anyhow. Should be more like: approximately match speed of destination lane, signal, locate gap large enough to slip into, adjust speed to find gap, resume speed of traffic, re confirm gap appropriateness via mirrors, move left, turn off signal. Except instead of a clear order of operations, all of them sorta need done at once, until you actually go to merge. You are correct. Even mental checklists don’t work, because you can’t really stop doing all the driving tasks to perform a speci fic one.
