BRB, putting classic plates on the $200 Miata

Decided that it wasn’t worth paying recurring registration costs (especially with them doubling this year) for something that sees limited usage already, so I took the plunge and applied for SP tags . In Oregon it’s a one time registration and a permanent plate.

We ird to think that early Miatas qualify for antique/classic plates in most states.

Damn. We have to pay extra every year for classic plates in AZ. Ours are an awesome copper and red though.

Special people often have yellow plates

did the same with the Rabbit. It costs about 2.5x as much to get the one time collector plate, so if I keep it for 3 years it’ll pay off.

We’ll see

Well this car certainly is special

Aw, the Oregon collector plate has the retro theme. The Washington ones are boring versions of the standard plate. We can use a year appropriate vintage one if we can find one , but I’d like to get an old style green on white directly from the licensing office.

Here is was actually half the cost that I would have paid for a standard registration

I find it very weird/depressing that a lot of cars that I remember new (including the first new car that I bought) are now eligible for those plates...

That is a real cool plate.

Assume there’s no usage restrictions then if it costs extra?

Yeah, I like the design a lot more than the “busy” standard plates we get. All except pacific wonderland, I love that design but it’s just not worth the premium to me.

And I agree, those old green/white plates look great.

Yeah, I kind of permanently have it in my head that “antique” classification ends in the 60s and feel weird seeing newer cars with the plates.

There’s got to be some sort of term for it. When I was a kid, cars would start falling apart after 5 years, so having one that was 25 years old? That was a testament to the owner’s love and/or insanity, so the plate was a badge of honor.

Today if anyone is nutty enough to give a modern car proper TLC, 25 years isn’t that crazy. But we haven’t changed the standard, just like we haven’t changed the social security retirement ago. We just keep on.

I wonder if the Vintage Car Tag fund will go broke one day, too.

/remember being a kid and cross-shopping brand new Miatas and Corrados with dad

//because VW and Mazda were so small, they shared a dealership

No usage restriction. You basically just pay an extra fee for the cool plate.

Kinja'd!!!2

Is there a usage restriction?

WA has that, but I doubt it has ever been enforced.  I’ve had year of manufacture plates on the fintail for over 20 years now (great 25 cent yard sale find), and the car was a DD for a few years after I re-registered it with the new old plates.

Ahh, we have a reissued plate that is similar

Kinja'd!!!

Standard registration, so not limit on use or what vehicle it can go on, but a nice old school design

Technically?

It is supposed to only be used for shows, club activities, etc... But really, Oregon doesn’t track mileage so meh.

Sounds like WA.  I’ve never heard of anyone having an issue, and I have seen the plates on numerous mundane 80s cars.  As registration is insanely expensive here, at least within the Sound Transit taxation zone, the appeal of a one time fee is apparent.

Yeah, you guys got totally fucked over on that one. I’ve seen some  ludicrous charges for reg coming out of that area/

My Bluetec was over $500.  I like to think of the fintail effectively being free as lessening the pain just a little.

There is an age restriction. The vehicle had to be at least twenty five years old.

I don’t understand why people pay extra money for that ugly “wine country” plate. Maybe they want to look douchey?

How much did it run you? My Studebaker still has Minnesota collector plates. I should probably register it in Oregon at some point.

That’s quite palatable.
