If they cared so much why didn't she reply to David and keep it instead of ignoring him and letting the insurance company have it?

Which “they”?
The family who originally owned it lost it to the insurance company when it was totaled.

Not everybody has discretionary money just lying around, buddy

My understanding is that you have the option to buy in from insurance and that amount is usually quite a bit less than the check they cut you depending on damage done vs what it’s worth.

You don’t have to fix it in 5 minutes you can keep it an take as long as you’d like.

For that much you could buy, uh, a not-totaled Cherokee. Not a great one, but good enough

Sure they do — it’s all a matter of degree. I have 400 dollars in quarters in a Ziploc bag but I’m too lazy to roll them and too cheap to use coinstar. Anyway, point is I've got serious Paseo money lying around

You don’t have to give a car up when it’s totaled or at least with some insurance companies. I had a car totaled, took the check kept the car.

Your check wasn’t as large as it would have been then.

But I have my car. Money isn’t everything .

I’ve done that once, kept the car and got a check, then drove it around with a salvage title.
However, not every insurance company will insure a salvage title vehicle. Keeping a car on your property that you can not legally drive is not a great financial decision.

An HO equipped 5 speed XJ without rust in Michigan is the only reason this is justified. Manual XJs are rare enough that I decided it would be easier to make my own than find one to buy.

I know what $400 in quarters looks like and it weighs more than a tercel

We all make bad decisions every now and then when it comes to the heart.

Not everyone has that kind of discretionary space just lying around buddy.
Also, if $3 grand is too much money to fix it now and there’s no obvious reason you’ll suddenly have more discretionary money in the near future it’ll still be too much in a few months and that’s how you end up with a car in your yard that ain’t ever getting fixed.
