A few oddities at first, but it seems to be working just fine. It didn’t seem to like the video card until the BIOS was upgraded; the board still had the initial BIOS release from ages ago. It’s kind of nice having the fans on the video card and power supply controlled by the board and/or temperature as its a lot quieter than the same parts in the HP.
None of the fans I have seem to work with this board so I guess a trip to Micro Center Is in order. With that one just sitting on top of the CPU the temps seemed to be just fine in my limited testing according to a specs app I had running. I don’t know if I fully trust it since it was telling me that my 1080 only has 4GB of RAM.
Windows 10 doesn’t seem to be activating. It keeps saying something about problems connecting to the activation server. Since the old computer is dead and this new one is most of the old one but with a different motherboard I figure I should be able to reactivate since the copy of Windows is registered to my account. It was quite nice to Windows reconfigure itself to work with the new hardware without requiring a reinstall; it is almost Mac-like in its ease of use. Ab out friggin time, Microsoft...

I’m surprised the fans don’t work. Worth checking in the BIOS how they are configured, it’s possible fan headers configured for PWM won’t work right with traditional fans or vice versa, though I’d expect them to do ok, especially if things are actually getting hot (which might not be the case out of the case).
I’ve generally been able to get away with not reinstalling Windows as long as I was going Intel>Intel or AMD>AMD going back to the XP era at least. Switching manufacturers seemed likely to result in a blue screen though.

Contacting Microsoft with your key and your explanation that your other computer is dead should be enough. I’ve had problems with their activation servers too, but their customer service was good and the resolution was painless.

The fans work fine, but it’s the mounting of said fans that’s the problem. Perhaps I could have worded that better but it was late when I wrote that; sorry for the confusion . Either the backplate doesn’t fit near/around the socket on the back of the motherboard or the hole spacing doesn’t match (thanks again, HP, for your proprietary BS). Since I haven’t mounted the MB yet I’ll take it to the store to ensure I get something that fits, and this should be easier with the Gigabyte board than it would be if I was trying to reuse the HP board.

Slightly older system using parts from my now deceased HP Elite 8300 with a new (to me) motherboard :
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H motherboard
Intel i7-3770
32GB RAM
Gigabyte GTX-1080
Corsair AX850 power supply
2x 500GB Hitachi SSDs
Blu-ray burner
Various HDs and SSHDs of 2, 3 and 4TB capacity
It’s not state-of-the-art, but is still quite fast and does what I need of it. Cash outlay has been fairly minimal, with the video card being a notable exception (although I did buy it as a discounted, returned item and got a $40 rebate on top of that).
I need lots of 5.25" bays, and for the time being I’ll probably be using an ancient full tower I had laying around. The HDs are in a cooled rack that puts three drives in a double-height bay, and I’ve got a rack that holds 4 2.5" drives in a single bay. The media card reader/USB port thingy is on order and should be here in a few days. I’d like to have another optical drive as well as a 10-disc media storage box in there as well, but I’m out of bays. I’ll see what room is left over inside, and I may just rest that three drive array in the bottom of the case.
I do have a rare liquid-cooled HP Blackbird 002 case laying around, but the thing is massive and may not do what I need. In addition, the value of that thing is so high I’d rather just sell it and use the profit for a newer CPU, RAM and motherboard. DDR4 ain’t cheap, so I’ll wait until that drops in price before upgrading.
