Believe it or not, there’s a car show on Netflix that isn’t 100% terrible.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Yeah, lots of the same old tropes, but no BS drama. Just people working hard to make it. Not the worst way to spend an afternoon between real commitments.

It’s funny you say that, because I watched the first episode of this over the weekend, and I was contemplating a post about it. I thought it still had the big egos and manufactured drama typical of reality TV that I’m so tired of . I also didn’t like their aesthetic preference, based on what they did to that hacked and chromed T-bird. I prefer faithful restorations, but that was way beyond even resto-mod .

Maybe their subsequent projects looked better, but I didn’t stick around to find out.

I had kind of the same thought—while I appreciate that this show lacks the outright reality-show fights of say, Orange County Choppers, I still get the sense that everyone is playing up a bit of a character for the show. That, plus my reflex t o paint the owner of Gotham Garage with the same aesthetic brush as that Count guy in Vegas or Jesse James (spider webs, gothic calligraphy/tattoo fonts, oversized wheels, and dick-measuring by engine size versus actual performance), I scoff just a bit at their claims of “one-of-a-kind touches” that should actually increase the value of one of their builds.

I really think they’d find more money in doing more subdued resto-mods or catering to a customer’s specific tastes. There’s certainly skill in the fa b work they do, but I can’t help but think that their work appeals to a very, very n iche subset of customers. The end result rarely fits my taste, but I like the cars they start with.

It’s not great, but it’s also, amazingly, not terrible.

So it’s got that goin for it.

I’ll grant that. I suppose I’m just over sensitized to the common reality TV format. Real World started it. Survivor made it really take off, and now it’s everywhere, including anything on HGTV or Food Network.

Also, I’m sure it depends a lot on your taste in cars.

I was kind of thinking the same about the cars.  Their entire plot line revolves around being able to trade up the cars they do.  They say, “this car will be worth x number of dollars.”  But that’s only true if they find the right buyer for the specific niche they build.  What are the odds that the show already has the buyers lined up and the garage doing these jobs custom to order before filming even starts?

I liked it, not too much drama or fake time crunches/deadlines, and some of the builds were cool, I liked about 50% of them. The chick felt a little gratuitous but oh well.

I should've thought of it that way, yeah. And the haggling goes way too quickly for the dollar amounts being discussed--I think you're spot-on that a lot of the build details and price are likely pre-arranged.
