About as powerful as a Sea Horse too?

I’ve always wanted a boat. I have thus far been smart enough not to buy one. The saying is: “The best two days of owning a boat are the day you buy it and the day you sell it”. Hopefully I have a better experience because I’ve got an engine to fix up now!

Kinja'd!!!

With the original tank?! Yussss please!

This is a Johnson Sea Horse 10 from what I believe is the late 50's or early 60's. I am not positive. I haven’t had much time to do research. It is a known good running engine that has been stored for many years.

I did not grow up in a ‘boat’ family. Once my people got off the potato or turnip boat, we stayed on the land. We haven’t been a sea faring family for many generations. I am looking to change the hydrophobia and get my sea legs ( realistically putt’ around a pond and catch some perch ).

I’d like to do some occasional fishing, but mostly leisure drives around a lake, picnic on the beach, and maybe some shore camping. Wouldn’t that be the life? Now I need to buy some boat shoes and a Buick.

Lean? High? High speed? I need a crash course.

It is in a complete condition with tank. It doesn’t appear to me to be modified or known to be dicked-off-wa’hacked-back-together or anything else.

Sure ain’t pretty.

Seems to me it could be as easy as a carburetor rebuild, tune up, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for a test. Anyone know much about outboard motors or have any suggestions about the best place to buy parts? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Once this motor is fixed up - hopefully for cheap - I’ll be buying an affordable used aluminum boat. That will be another adventure. Prices seem to hover around $500 for something that doesn’t leak with no accessories. I’m thinking a couple seats, Bimini top, and current paper work would be a delight.

I have restored a 48 evenrude outboards that old are very simple the carb rebuild kit is a good idea you will also need a roll of cork gasket material and an exacto knife.

Get some brake cleaner and some dry gas to clean parts dry gas will dissolve old hardened gas but also rubber so keep it away from that

Once running one of the biggest things to have on hand at all times is shear pins. Modern outboards have a clutch on the prop if you hit something floating below the surface, old outboards have shearpins that will leave you dead in the water.

Found a picture of my test tank, a saw horse in the lake in Maine.

If that was me, that saw horse would be upside down and I’d be missing an arm....

It is only 3.3 horse. It worked really well actually.

Don’t believe the haters. Boat life is best life, even if it is hilariously costly. I will never move inland and I will never not own a boat.

I don’t have too much advice to give, but I did have a Sea Horse 5 when I was about 15. I got it running after a carb clean, tested it in a barrel, and bought a beat up 14' aluminum john boat with no papers for $350 at a garage sale. I managed to get it registered in NY along with a junk trailer someone gave me that I painted and cleaned up.

I got up really early and took it out on a nearby lake while the water was still glass smooth. It actually got up on plane and it was the best feeling in the world. I took it all the way across the lake, where it promptly died and refused to restart.

I never did get it running right again after that, but the happy ending is that I sold everything for $500 and used the money to buy my first motorcycle when I turned 16. I honestly wish I still had it though - it was one of my first times wrenching on anything and I’m sure it would be a different outcome now. Hope you have more success than I did, and maybe do some circles near the shore on your first time out!

I’m hoping it gets running and stays that way.  Thanks for sharing your experiences.
