I love the way you think
Also, here’s something I promised you a while back when we were talking about Thinkpads:
Please take this and throw it onto any ‘80s-’90s-era appropriate IBM PCs.

Saved, thanks! Should be nice and easy to adapt to other resolutions and aspect ratios.

I got a 2GB 7870 kicking around somewhere if you are at all interested. You could even play Crysis, think about that.

I have one as well, though it’s currently shoved into my old desktop. I’ve also got an even more period correct Radeon 2900 Pro that I’ve been meaning to take to the electronics recycling. That thing was garbage when I got it, and I really should have sold it the second I bought a 3870 to replace it, but didn’t want to have to deal with shipping it.

I used to read old PC Magazine issues when I was bored in college. The ads were great fun and so was sneering at them from my then-new 2012 ThinkPad T520 with its 4GB RAM.
Still, I really appreciate vintage computer tech even if it’s another expensive hobby I think I should stay away from. I’ll just stick with watching YouTube videos ripped from old tech demo CDs.

YouTube is way less heartburn, that’s for goddamn sure.
I think I still have a ThinkPad 860 around here somewhere.

Hey, my work PC is running that same processor. Unfortunately , it only has 4GB of DDR2. It struggles with more than a few open programs. It was all I could scrounge from the machines in vacant offices in the department . Someday we’ll hire folks for those positions and they’re really going to have struggling PCs with only the 1.5GB I left in them.

I’d be surprised if anyone gets hired into those positions over the next year or two. I keep thinking that someday the library will replace these 10 year dell office boxes we’re all running, but budgets are tight and the Dean is, well, analog. We’ve talked about establishing replacement cycles like most of the rest of the university and all the local/state/federal government operations in the area, but she ends up looking at you like there is something growing out of your forehead. Because she doesn’t do more than an email window in Outlook and maybe a Word document open at the same time, she doesn’t see a problem...

I heartily support this. Can we make you the next Dean of the library?
I was wrong, my machine is rocking a Q6600 from 2007.

Nice!
I still have the old Pavilion 8390, which was bought brand new. I still have everything that came with it, including the M90 monitor and Polk Audio speakers. The case is certainly weird on these, but it has a late ‘90s charm to it.
I installed the Zip drive much later (~2012). It was hard to track down at the time, and it probably still is.
It had the Iomega ZipCD installed from ~2000 until I replaced it with the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive above.
I ended up painting the front bezel of the CD drive, as the different greys are ugly, as you have also noted. One of the Krylon greys matches the darker grey color fairly well. I forget which one, though I remember just matching it in the store based on the paint cap color and the blanking plate that was in place of the Zip drive.
