The all-new 2019 Subaru Forester adds a raft of new features to an already popular on and off-road crossover vehicle. Can the new technology, safety and comfort keep up with the competition like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V?

In this video we take a look at the mid-range Sport model, which features blacked out details, orange highlights and a Forester-exclusive S# SI-Drive mode.

So they bumped power by what, 8%? That’s good, but man Subaru. I love you, I really do. But there’s no reason a car of this size shouldn’t be putting out 200 at least. Literally my only real complaint about my 2015 is that it needs 20% more power because Subaru looks at the sector trends, and then subtracts 10%. They push the envelope on so many things, bringing so many upmarket features downmarket, but why not engines? It’s infuriating.

SAD, SAD, SAD shadow of it’s former self.

The closest they ever got... SH Forester S-edition in Australia, around 2010 or so.

Kinja'd!!!

EJ255 and 5-speed automatic Variable-Torque-Distribution rear-biased gearbox, both similar to Outback XT/Legacy GT automatic in the US, but after that model had been cancelled.

250 turbocharged horsepower, and 65% rear bias AWD with variable bias adjustment.

It was a very short distance from there to an EJ257 + 6-speed Manual DCCD gearbox from WRX STI, which if paired together as the manual and automatic sides of the Forester STI coin, would have SOLD LIKE CRAZY. CUVs sell, and one with that sort of performance would stand out for enthusiasts.

They have moved on to now the second platform upgrade beyond that on the Forester, as well as the Crosstrek’s second generation, as well as moved on to the FA/FB series direct injected engines, with FA20 in the WRX, and now FA24 in the Ascent....

and still no performance S ubaru for practical adults that still like real engineering and versatile traction and speed,   that isn’t a 20-something flat-brim sport compact sedan.

Subaru may be doubling their sales, but they forgot the other half of the equation, to put all that new-found revenues into some fun stuff, also.

At least Porsche does lots of fun stuff on the 911 and 718 lines, with all the revenue that Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera provide.

Subaru is dumping turbocharging on all but a few engines, dumping their flat-6, and their manual gearbox options... while OTHER companies add AWD, and add turbocharged 4 and 6 cylinder engine options

Hell, even CADILLAC is trying to make a 5-passenger CUV that focuses on being “Fun to Drive”... from CADILLAC!!!! and it probably is more fun than Forester or Crosstrek’s anemic efforts.

XT is dead.

No, and even so, the Forester base engine should be around 200 and the XT at the 250+ figure that it was. There’s no cognizeable need for the nearly 100 HP gap between the two engines, especially when 200 is well within Subaru’s capabilities, and within the needs of the base vehicle.

Counterpoint:

There is no realistic reason a car like this needs more power.

Hell 100hp was enough for me to safely get to highway speeds getting on the interstate.

I mean, yes? It’s a 3500 pound vehicle and 170 hp is fine when it’s just you in the car. But when it’s five people in the car, plus several large suitcases and a full roof rack... it starts to chug a bit. That little extra punch sure would take it over the top, so to speak. And I say this as someone who also owns a Fit with it’s walloping 114 hp and wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Nobody bought them” -- Subaru. That said, there is now room in the lineup for a proper STI version of the Forester. Previously, the XT filled that role.

My current daily has 170-ish HP, weighs 3400lbs. It has put down 15.2s in the quarter on 27" AT tires. Even loaded with our family, all our gear, and a trailer behind it, I’ve never felt lacking for power.

Maybe the problem is people trying to overdrive their vehicles......

Incomplete picture... how much TORQUE, and what gearing?

a low-revving tractor of an engine, with good gearing an a lot of off-peak torque, will do fine.

An engine with 170hp above 5250 RPMS, and very little off-peak torque, and long highway/economy gearing, won’t be able to get out of it’s own way even on economy car sized tires, let alone moderate AT heavier, thicker-walled tire, with 1000lbs of people and gear in addition to the 3400lb curb weight. Heck, BRZ’s 200hp with no torque wouldn’t help, either.

an anemic 4-cylinder with 170hp is much different than a torquey 4 or 6-cylinder with a torque plateau under a modest 170hp peak.

But, but, torque doesn’t matter, it’s all about the power!

1/2 the commentary on here.

It’s highway geared ( running 2000rpms at 75mph ) , with a little over 230ft-lbs of torque, and a redline  of  5800rpms.
