As most of you are aware, I have two E9X BMWs, an E92 2009 328i and an E90 2011 M3. What you might not be aware of is the fact they are optioned differently . Comfort access was selected for my M3, but not for my 328i; as part of this package you get touch sensitive handles and key-less ignition, meaning you don’t have to take you keys out of your pocket. Normally I don’t have to think about it because I seldom drive the M3 to work, so if I’m going to work or if it’s a weekday, keys come out of my pocket.

Today is different I drove the M3 to work because the 328i was eating its front tires. I was aware of the issue and knew the 328i needed an alignment, but since I was going to put new tires on soon, I decided to just drive it as is. On Thursday evening I noticed some canvas showing on one of the tires, so I parked it. While the 3 is getting some new to it rubber put on today, I took the M3 to work. The reason they’re not brand new tires is because the fact I took them off the front of the M3 and kept them when the M3 got new tires earlier this year.

Anyways, without even thinking about it, apparently, as a force of habit, I had put the keys into the M3 ignition without realizing it. I looked down about half way to work and saw the keys in the ignition , and couldn’t remember doing it. Every now and then I catch myself doing something like this because even through both my cars are E9Xs, they’re slightly different.

why do you have 2 E9x’s? Isn’t the point of a 2nd vehicle to be a lot more  different to the other?

I used to leave my headlights on a lot because I had Honda’s which have the headlight switch on a stalk, and I got into the habit of turning on the headlights at the same time I turned the key. I think it started while I was delivering pizzas, it saved some time to both together, also it felt nice because both of my hands did the same motion. Problem was I started doing it during the day, and not noticing, then I’d leave the lights on and not even think about it, because why would I have my lights on at 11am on a sunny day? Eventually I trained myself to do the same thing, in reverse, as I turned the key out .

Of coarse now I have a car that doesn’t make you turn the key, or turn on the headlights , and another that has a toggle switch for the headlights(still not used to that) , so its not a problem at all!

When I was car searching, I wanted something that was cheaper to drive than my M3 and yet still decently fun. I knew I was going to be racking up the miles and I didn’t want to subject either my wallet or my M3 to that. I looked at other cars, but I couldn’t find anything else that did everything I wanted to in my budget with a manual; I was looking to spend under 20k. So I got the 3. If I had to do it again, I might have gotten something different , but the 3 filled the role perfectly, I put 27k on it in a year without any real major issues.

I actually prefer this key-insert design. Hate how I have no place to put my key in my F30. Partly because my garage remote is keychained to the car key (the condo keyfob type).

And yes, I hang my remote from my Solstice key too, but I also did the recall.

TIL M3 tires will actually fit on 328 wheels. I always thought that the M3 got bigly wide tires that wouldn’t fit on the standard wheels.

It’s the front M3 tires that fit the rear 328i. Staggered of course. Kind of funny how that works.

The M3 came with 18x8.5 in the front and 18x9.5 in the back. The stock tire width in the front is 245 and in the back is 265. The 3, thanks to the M-sport wheels, has 18x8 in the front and 18x8.5 in the back.. Stock tires were 225 in the front and 255 in the rear. So they’re really not that much different. You can fit wider tires on the M3 though without any mods.

I still had my explorer when I got my M3, and despite the fact the Explorer still used a key, I seldom looked for a button when I got in that car.

Yeah, I dunno. I drive the ST and CX-3 so often that when I hop into the Kia, I just sometimes instinctively reach for a button without thinking.

ZCPs were never sold here :(

Mine does have an M kit and sports suspension though, which is the closest you could  get.
