So I notice today my soft top ripped. Fuck. What do I do? It’s right next to a seam. I know Robbins is the go to, but a bit pricey? Any other brands? AutoTopsDirect?
Damnit.

Robbins, the money is worth it for the quality, or see if there’s a used one for sale semi-locally from a part-out.

Alternatively, pull a Jake (of bad ideas so you don’t have to) by buying a hardtop and deleting your soft top to negate the extra weight.

Do you live near the coast? If so, look for a sailmaker. Many will fix ragtops for a lot cheaper than flat out replacing it.

Thats a no go. For what I use the car, I almost never have the top up. I'd hate to have to remove a hard top constantly. And it lives outside.

Robbins makes the best soft tops. Hardtops are really hard to come by these days, and the ones on craigslist are usually really beat up, and usually just as expensive if not more-so than a brand new higher end Robbins soft top.
In the mean time, get some soft top fabric repair stuff and fix the tear as good as you can. You don’t want water getting into the cabin and making mold.

If you don’t want to buy new, buy a used one from PartsGroup that’s already on the frame to reduce install time! They currently have just a black soft top with glass in their inventory at the moment, no tan. http://partsgroup.com/part/1999-2005-mazda-miata-black-softtop-with-glass-rear-window-on-the-frame

At least the ones where I live do. They even advertise it. Th at’s what my parents did when they bought their Wrangler. It had a loose seam and a puncture on top and the local sailmaker fixed it up real nice.

The top on my 94 isn’t pretty, but it keeps the water out. I’ve used silicone to deal with small rips, but I’m also not too worried about resale value.

My NA had a shitty eBay replacement top when I bought it. It was horrible. Spend the money for a quality one!

Robbins is the only top you want to pay for. In many regards, they make them better than the OEM tops were. It should cost around a grand (give or take, depending on glass/heated glass window), and you should write that check to the upholstery shop of your choice with a smile on your face and consider it the best money you’ll ever spend on a miata.
I installed a new top myself on my NB back in the day . While there is no special magic in installing a new top, it is a very, very, very long, very tedious job, and then you get to experience the joy that is stretching the top to latch it for the first time. No part of that job was enjoyable or satisfying, and I used to turn wrenches for a living. Paying someone else to install it is worth every single penny.
My mechanical mentor was the owner of a miata specialists shop. Even there we didn’t change tops ourselves more than a couple of times . They replaced many, many tops, with nearly all of them farmed out to a nearby upholstery shop. It wasn’t worth the money , and the upholstery guys who do that kind of work all day long could do it in half the time . Even with the markup for the upholstery shop’s time , everyone including the customers got a good deal under that arrangement (because there was an arrangement in place between the miata shop and upholstery shop for sending 50+ miata top installs their way a year. T here was also a surcharge for any customer that made them install a non-R obbins top or any top without the rain rail installed from the factory ) .

if you are installing yourself after doing the job you will regret not getting a premium top because you will never want to do it again.
