So next year I want to compete for points in auto-x. That means I’ll need better tires to be competitive(In my class thats what most people run for summer tires). I want see what the Juke can really do on good tire. I already have the wheels picked out (Motegi MR131 TrakLites), for the sizes I thinking of doing a reverse stagger, & a larger wheel upfront to reduce sidewall roll (I’ve heard Indy 500's have soft sidewalls). For the front I’m looking at 18"x 9"(w/ 255/40r18), & in the rear I thinking of going 17"x 7"(w/ 215/55r17).

I want TrakLite’s because they are about 10lb less per wheel Vs. stock. The only tire I can find in those two sizes that match is the Firehawk Indy 500, I was already set on that tire anyways. Pro’s & Con’s of running the possible set up?

Another set up I thought of is a square stance 17"x 8" (w/ 235/50r17). Same wheel/tire, my worry is that be too much tire for the rear as they are non drive wheels.

Pontiac ran a reverse stagger to make the GP GXP drive less like a pig. It works. The Indy 500s aren’t really competition grade but they’re leagues better than whatever’s stock on your car. I’d run 18s all around though. Also if your class and governing body allows for a bigger rear sway bar absolutely get one.

They are better then the Toyo AS’s, in my class Indy 500s or Sport Comp- 2s seem to be to go to summer tire. I’ll have check the rules to see if sway bars are allowed in stock classes. The rear does not get much sidewall roll to justify going to 18", also 17" tires are way cheaper then 18" tires.

Run the Re71r if you want the best tire money can buy short of Hoosiers. But just get any of the 200tw competitors for quite a bit less if you just want a competitive enough tire. I've run the Dunlop z2 star specs through 4 track days now and still have life left in them. They get sloppy on a hot day by the third session so they would probably be pretty good for autox.

SCCA typically allows for one modified sway bar for stock classing.  You can either disconnect one or upgrade it, can’t do both.

Tire compound > ideal tire sizing

I rather not have such a sticky tire, my car is tippy flippy according the SCCA.

Are you stuck on those exact sizes? You can usually squeeze a 225 instead of a 215 and be ok. Might open up some more options. I'm running the nitto nt05s, they're decent. But no re71

I imagine if you upgrade it and disconnect the upgraded sway bar you could waste money and get around the rule...

It’s an idea in my head, I have unti l may of next year (thanks winter) until the next year to decide. There is not much weight on rear end, so I don’t want too much tire there.

After the last event I feel like it could do good. I was 5th of 13 cars in my class, the top 4 cars had summer tires. Out of the all the cars with all seasons in my class I had the top time.

If you want to be competitive, RE71R or bust. If you’re not going that far, don’t bother staggering the wheels/tires, you’ll struggle to sell them later.

If I end up changing to a truck + rwd car for next year, I’ll have a set of Rays 57G (18x8.5 ET45) with Michelin pilots sport a/S3s (255/40R18) for sale next spring. They’d probably look pretty good on your Juke.  I used a set of these tires on my Golf for autoX and they were pretty good.

Alternatively, I’ve got a set of Enkei PF01s (17x8 ET45) you could have now if you’re interested. It’s a very light but strong wheel, good quality as well, though the center caps need repainting.

I assume they are 5x 114.3 like 99% of Japanese cars, also what is the center bore?

66mm on the Rays - they’re Nissan wheels, notice the Nismo logos. :)

75mm on the Enkeis, you’ll want hubcentric adapters, mine won’t work for you.

And yeah, 5x114.3. This gen WRX is the first not to use 5x100.

Wat class are you running currently? If you are going to a wider wheel, I would imagine you are going to bump up classes. SCCA classing would almost certainly move you into a Street touring or street prepared class by increasing wheel width.

But that kind of tire staggering seems quite an extreme measure. Plus if you are on a true 200tw autox tire, you won’t have to worry about sid ewall flex.

Personally, if I were driving a joke and wanted to be competitive in what I’m assuming is a street class, I’d buy either an Re-71 or BF Rival S in a shorter and wider than stock size. Run 10-15 psi higher in the rear to start,  buy the biggest aftermarket rear sway bar available, and buy a set of quality dampers (a quick search revealed that I could buy some Bilstein B8's).  And I'd also sign up for an autocross school like EvoSchool.com

B Stock. There is no rule saying an increase in tire width will bump me up. Just plus/minus 2% for tire diameter.

Not every 200tw tire is that grippy. The biggest reason to get a legitimate low Treadwear tire is for heat. Those tire compounds most of the time can actually handle heat without becoming greasy plastic lunch trays. Should be able to find something in a usable size, there's always a little bit of play in tire sizing.

Second the rear sway bar! It should make a world of difference.

SCCA rules are exclusive, if it doesn’t say you can, you can’t.

For Street Classes, wheels can be +/1" in diameter but must remain stock width and the offset cannot change more than +/-7mm (they might have changed the offset rule, I haven’t looked recently).

Doesn’t look like you’re using SCCA rules though, but you might want to make sure you don’t run with any other clubs that do use the SCCA rule set.

RE71r or BFG Rival 1.5s are the only competitive tires.
