Paging aesthetics in motion...

Right now my girlfriend and I are hashing out some details for a vacation on Columbus day weekend since I just realized I have a four day weekend without even using vacation time. So first task was deciding on where to go. We were between Yosemite, Big Sur, Albuquerque NM for the balloon festival, Denver CO, and Seattle WA. Our general goal was to go see cool stuff and/or do fall things. Right now the front runner is Seattle since flights are affordable and there’s lots to do there that do not just involve nature. Plus it’s a nice time of year with less crowds and not quite winter yet. We don’t get the whole seasons thing in Socal so seeing “weather” is a vacation in itself.

Anyways, my tasks include looking into flights and car rental. Naturally I’m on Turo filtering by manual transmission only and dreaming about my potential options:

There’s a bunch of less exciting options otherwise. Subaru is like $100 more for three days and seeing as I already own an STi is probably a boring choice to rent. Although would be neat to basically feel like I brought my own car with me. The BMW is cheaper but is a simple 2 series entertaining? Ought to be when in manual I guess. And I always love the FJ for just being strange. I don’t think I want to deal with driving one but it would be an experience. Plus I’d definitely be down for making it down some stupid roads with aesthetics in motion, I’d be a good support vehicle when his Miata inevitably gets stuck or breaks.

So what are good places to see for a few days in the area? Fall colors are a high priority but Idk how much of that is in that area.

The sky view observatory in the Columbia Tower is well worth a visit. Highest public viewing point in the PNW. Breathtaking views of the city, the puget sound and the mountains in all directions. Try to show up an hour before sunset so you’ll see the city during the day and the night.

Weather and time permitting, spending a day at Mt. Rai nier would be an excellent way to see “Fall things”. Some of the best driving roads in the state, and scenery that will have you pulling over every couple of minutes to pick your jaw up off the floor.

Leavenworth (Bavarian- themed town east of Seattle) is an enjoyable experience if you’ve never been. There’s some absolutely gorgeous hiking in the area, as well as even more phenomenal driving roads. Most of my adventures are halfway between Seattle and Leavenworth.

If you want a taste of “ Seattle culture”, go barhopping in Cap Hill for a night. Or if you’re into somethin g a bit less “SF Bay” , try the Ballard/Freemont neighborhoods. I stroooo ngly recommend Schilling Cider House.

Hopefully others will chime in with good recommendations

Rainier is definitely high on my list. Not for any sort of real hike but at least to see some of it and to drive fun roads around there. Are Hurricane Ridge and Cape Flattery worth the trek out to the West? I had those marked on my list of places to go when my original cross country drive plan was to the North.

Rainier is great because you don’t have to spend a single second hiking if you don’t want to, and you’ll still feel like you’re on a crazy expedition to another planet. Hurricane ridge is a very long drive to get to a secluded spot with little else to do nearby. It’s cool, but a bit underwhelming for the time it takes to get there. Can’t comment on cape flattery

Oh and I think you need to repost this during “standard business hours” lol.

Haha yeah probably, but I’m gonna figure out more solid plans anyways. You’ve already given me enough to start a direction. Just booked my return flight for Monday since I was able to get Southwest for $96 and I had a $50 voucher so it was like half off that. Still have to figure out when I’m heading out there, probably Thursday night or Friday morning. Somewhat short trip but I don’t need to see absolutely everything anyways. Girlfriend is sorting through airbnb options and I'm still debating on Turo cars. STi is probably my front runner still.
