What did you buy? Some cheapo motorcycle helmet? Or some expensive carbon european helmet?
I am tempted by a cheap open face but dont want to regret it.

I bought a Black Armor Helmet from Winding Road Racing.
Great value and legal in all sanctioning bodies.
I customized mine with a blue face shield and some decals...

You will get plenty of advice to the effect of “spend as much as you think your head is worth”. I think that it some bullshit. Just make sure you buy something with the proper certification for what you need to do with it. I'd say go with a Snell SA rated, full faced helmet to cover pretty much everything. I went with the open face to save money while doing just autox. But now I'm doing track days and needed a full faced helmet. So the open face is now collecting dust and I could have just bought the other one first to save money. Make sure you get the latest year model so that you don't have to replace it any time soon. Saferacer.com has some good affordable options, I bought mine for around $200 if I remember correctly.

Most events will require a snell rated helmet. I prefer open face as I can see more, where an full face forces you focus to see the windsheild & blocks lots of the inside of the car. Saying that G-Force seems to have a good product for a reasonable price. I’m looking buying their GF1 open face helmet.

I went with a cheapish snell rated open face helmet for autox and trackdays. I was hoping that it’ d be cooler in the Texas heat.
Karting tracks and convertibles often require closed face helmets. I met James Wilson a few years ago at an SCCA Time Trial at Texas World Speedway and he was very passionate about his helmets and racing (I had just received my current helmet as a Christmas gift and still almost bought one of his helmets) , my next helmet will be from Black Armor.

As others have said, make sure it is Snell rated. I bought a full-face so I could be comfortable in the car and on a motorcycle. More money gets you better materials, better ventilation, and better features (like a removable/washable liner). They say there are two basic shapes - Shoei and Bell. I find that is true. I’m not a fan of buying one online since I want to try it on before I decide.

I have a Snell 1998 (I think?) full face helmet missing a visor. The only reason I got away with using it at the only autocross I ever attended was that they didn’t have enough loaner to let me use one so they figured it was atleast Snell, even if it was old. Personally, I think helmets are a bad idea in non-prepped ( stock seats and no cage) autocross, I think it just increases the chances of a neck injury with no real benefit to protection. If I was to do auto cross again I would wear the required helmet and some sort of HANS device or motorcycle neck brace/collar to limit excess neck and head movement.

Look up what rating is required by the organizing body you’ll be running in. I know SCCA requires Snell or ECE ratings. I have a Bell Qualifier DLX and I love it.

Assuming you’ re looking at car activities no more extreme than autocross and maybe a track day in a street legal car, get the Snell M2015 rated helmet of your choice. The “M” rating is the requirement for SCCA autocross and most track days, and they’re cheaper than an Snell SA2015 rated helmet for road racing use. The SA rating passes a roll bar impact test and has flame retardant padding and paint, and none of these things matter for autocross type use. You’ll also pay correspondingly more for an SA2015 rated helmet.
As for brands, try various ones on if you can and
pick one that fits the shape of your head comfortably. There is considerable difference between brands and the shapes of heads they fit comfortably.
I’m a fan of G-force helm
e
ts, both because they’re a good helmet at a great price point, and they fit the shape of my head well.

G-force does make good helmets at a great price point. I’ve been using a series of closed-face (non- optional for me) G-force helmets since 2002. The other thing to factor in helmet decisions is how the fit the shape of your head (also why I like G-force), and there is considerable variation between brands. For autocross use, it may not matter much when you’re wearing it for five minuets at time, but it matters when you’re wearing it for an hour at a time...

I find my HJC CL-17 comfortable for auto cross. It is low cost, closed face so can be used for other things. Brand fit to different head shapes is definitely a thing. Higher cost often means less weight, so if you aren’t wearing it all day this is less important.

I've got an open-faced Bell. Whatever you buy, go somewhere you can actually try it on. Fitment is critical to both safety and comfort.

This is what I have been looking at getting for exactly the same reasons; just to have my own helmet around when I get the nerve to go to an Auto-X event.
Despite the visor, it has a large enough opening that I do not feel like I am limiting my vision too much compared to an open-face helmet.

That whole “eject” thing was a coverup. Perkins survived the battle, and went to work for the government.
