How do you explain to a deaf driver that his DRLs aren’t actually his headlights and he doesn’t have any lit taillights?

With written words?

My thoughts:
Light the taillights when the DRLs are on. Some cars (including mine) do this.
Handle switching between DRLs and headlights automatically.

That’s tough to do on a major roadway.

I’m not sure having taillights lit during the day is a good idea: too often it’s hard to distinguish between running lights and brake lights, but at least at night the difference is more apparent.
I just don’t understand how we’ve gotten to this point without some standardized behavior on dash lights, tail lights, and head lights. It’s crazy hard to know when your car isn’t doing what you want it to do.

Cops have pens and notepads. You’re tal king about explaining to a deaf driver why they’ve been pulled over, right?

I’m going to debate this point, brake lights are significantly brighter than tail lights.

No, I try to let people know when something is wrong with their rear lights since often they aren’t aware. I spend way too much time alerting people to busted brake lights.

There are a lot of those guys out there, unfortunately.

Better specifically direct it to foreign automakers, the American ones would just add another warning chime and call it done.

I can’t say I’ve ever had an issue telling them apart. Subjectively, I think the cars are easier to track with the lights. Also I’ve lived in places where the right lane can be used either for parking or driving, and it’s way nicer to be able to tell instantly if a car is active or not.
And yeah are lighting rules are simultaneously too restrictive and yet shockingly open as to what is allowed.

And what kind of car do you have?

‘06 Volvo S60, so not exactly the most modern technology. My ‘03 S40 did this as well, which I guess is not especially shocking. It seems the right way to do things though.

Show them the headlight knob... turn to “auto”... problem solved.
But yeah, my MILs caddy will give you a dash message if the daylight sensor senses it’s too dark out and will tell you “ headlights suggested”. And this is an ‘03 Deville. So the techs been around for a while. But the auto functions do the trick, but for some reason people don’t just leave them on auto. Pretty easy to just let the car do it’s thing.

We were driving separate vehicles.
I found auto tough to trust when I rented a Kia recently. I wanted the headlights on more often than the car did. I suppose the DRLs made it redundant, but I trust my judgment more than its.

Yeah, that does complicate matters a bit.

When the brake lights fail on my 2001 VW Transporter...my check engine light comes on. So far it does for a dead globe or a dead switch. How’s that for fancy?
Otherwise...I’d vote for a xenon strobe effect from the instrument cluster that is linked to an external light sensor and the headlight switch. If it is dark and your headlights are not on then the strobe effect will tell the driver unequivocally that they are being an arse.
