Bears don't care if you locked your car doors.

When the bear wants in he’s getting in. Only real way to prevent it is to keep all food and food like things out of your car, which usually means leaving no backpacks or bags in the car, bears will even go after gum.

I find bears are polite and they usually try the door handles first. If you’ve never seen one try it’s amazing they lay on their backs and raise their arm, placing a front paw right under the door handle and just open it.

That’s why I always say it’s best to park with the doors unlocked and the front of the car pointing down a bit so when the bear opens the door it swings open and stays open. I’ve had bears in my cars several times and have only found a few paw prints and wide open doors in the morning as proof.

This isn’t so bad at least the bear made his own exit, when they get stuck in the car it’s a total loss, nothing shreds a car interior like a stuck bear. So in some ways locking your cars does minimize damage.

sigh - “ A bear opened the door to our unlocked van. I unwittingly closed him in, then went back a while later to retrieve something from the car, I realized a bear was inside. After the automatic doors failed to open, my husband had to unlock it with the key. The bear found another way out. We’re alive - our van, not so much!”

Bears will go after anything with a strong sweet smell. Deodorant, coconut Pine Trees...

The only way to prevent this is to avoid teaching bears that people are a food source. Keep people food away from them, so they don’t associate people smells with food sources, only use bear-proof dumpsters (and actually put your garbage into them), don’t let them observe other animals getting food from you.

Unfortunately there are tons of people out there who just don’t get that, as you can tell from all the reports of people getting caught feeding them from their car window in Yellowstone.

I don’t understand why people think it’s okay to demonstrate to a wild animal with sharp claws and teeth that they can get food out of you. It really just seems like a bad idea in general.

Yeah, I saw that on one episode of Mythbusters. The bear sauntered over, sniffed around the van a bit, then reached out, pulled the handle and slid the door open.

nothing shreds a car interior like a stuck bear.

It’s somewhat amusing how, like flies and other insects, bears can figure their way into  places, but cannot make that leap to getting back out....

“ I unwittingly closed him in, then went back a while later”

I guess it’s possible, but how do you just miss a bear in you van?

Problem is bears ain't dumb. I went back packing in the Adirondacks once. Did everything right. Ate away from the campsite, food in a bag on a wire over the lake. Bear ripped open my tent and took a look anyway. Enough people are dumb he probably figured it was worth checking out

Well, I mean, people don’t notice their own children in the back seat, when they were the ones that  put them there.
