There’s a lotta potential left in this machine; compared to how it came to me, I’m very content with how it sits now.

Report:

1. Coolant leakage isn’t as bad as I initially thought. It’s only dripping for now. The car stays at middle tick and slightly below while driving. Louder fans come on when I shut the car off.

2. Acceleration is kinda “meh”? I’m not really feeling much “GO” from the pedal. I’m thinking the linkage or cable needs adjusting. It’s decent enough to get where I need to go, but full throttle leaves much to be desired.

3. Brakes are great! The suspension is in better condition than my 944 was. Stiff enough and not too harsh around town. Manual steering isn’t as hefty as one would expect.

4. Shifting is patient. Can’t speed shift or I’ll grind gears. Unfortunately, because of the somewhat laggy throttle response, this makes upshifts and rev-matching downshifts tricky.

5. Headlights only go halfway up and have to be manually lowered.

6. That oil leak at the top of the turbo came back. Me thinks a tricky rebuild will come sooner. These turbos only originally lasted about 50k, and I’m at 52k.

So that’s how the car currently drives! I can’t wait to take it to Cars and Coffee Saturday! :)

Remember when a Jetta I had seemed to have lost its punch. Looked under the hood, under the car ... oh wait, the floormat is bunched behind the accelerator pedal.

You know what you should do?

You should bring this car (and all your monies) to me.

Yes, you absolutely require a full turbo rebuild - the CHRA and seals are shot. So may as well convert to VNT to fix the acceleration. And increase the base compression. And improve the fuel system. And fix the synchro issues. And improve the handling further . And eliminate the 30k timing belt interval. And address the anemic exhaust note. And take care of the interior devoid of proper wood. And I’m sure I can find some more to do...

How do you eliminate the 30K timing belt change interval?

The Careful Application o f Money(TM)

The 924 actually has two timing belts which must be done correctly. Crank-water-cam and crank-balance.

Kinja'd!!!

The cam belt can be converted to chain drive without substantial re-engineering of the faceplate and minimal modification to the water pump. (Basically, switch to inboard cog-drive instead of back face friction.) I’d be very hesitant to pull the balance shafts without a better understanding of high RPM behavior on this engine though.

“Then why doesn’t everyone do it?!” Because shit’s expensive, son! Have to machine new crank sprocket, new cam sprocket, and figure out the water pump. Which if you DON’T figure out or screw up even a little will result in the block going crunch. Oh, and you also need to solve for lubrication. I said “substantial” re-engineering. Not “cheap.” It’d be LOTSA money.

However, if you’ve got real budget? GEARS! ALL the gears!

Kinja'd!!!

Which honestly, is so  much easier just because you can literally chuck EVERYTHING in the timing belt cavity out in the trash, DROWN the thing in engine oil, and be completely done.

How expensive is it to convert to chains?  How much does a timing belt change typically cost on these?

In terms of dollars at a shop? $1000+ in labor alone.

In terms of your sanity? All of it.

A typical timing job on these is going to easily run you $1.5k at a reputable indy, and that’s every 30k or (I think it’s) 36 months.

Timing chain will run you about $1.5k every 100,000 miles. Timing gears when properly engineered tend not to require replacement ever.

Well I’d say it makes sense to do the conversion to chains.
