[Sees post about BOA credit card with 1.875% cash back if you have $20k+ invested at Merrill Lynch] Yeah I really should be an adult and move money sitting in my BOA checking account over to Merrill... [See’s PG’s post about the OG TT] ... [Starts browsing CL for early 2000's German cars instead ] Ooh here’s a red one. [Sees it’s a sketchy BHPH lot] How bad can it be, really?

Fidelity has a Visa that pays 2% cash back. All you need is a retirement or broker ag e account with them. You could open a Roth IRA for a couple hundred dollars. Their fee’s are a lot less than Merrill Lynch.

Thanks for the info.  They do my work 401k anyway so putting other investments there would be easy.

Yeah the turbo and Quattro and low prices make it super tempting for up here at 7500 feet.   My wife doesn’t want a “money pit” though which might be hard with a cheap one long term.  But for a low enough price it might not matter if I only get a year or two before the repairs become insurmountable.

Buy.

Maybe also stock up on coil packs, timing belt kits, cv boots and/or cv joints.

On one hand yes. On the other it was a clever use of a platform they had around and they were pretty popular up here in the  mountains where we get days that can go from roadster weather to 12 inches of snow in a few hours.

Crisp sunny morning, snow everywhere. Heating full blast. W h y not g o out in a n open-top car ?

In Germany (or Austria, or the north of Italy, etc), you may not see too many old Giulietta Spiders driving in the snow in winter. But you do see softtop quattro TTs, Carrera 4s and the like.

I n a n y c a s e t h e o p t i m a l w e a t h e r for an open-top car i s autumn or spring. A little e x t r a grip w h en t h e r e i s a sudd e n s h o w e r on a lea f y or otherwise u n c lean road is very welcome i ndeed .

You keep 20K in checking?!  Time to put that money to work buying and fixing an old Audi.

My dad had one of these that he bought brand new. Gray over baseball glove leather seats. It looks cool, the interior has neat details, it seems like a capable/fun car up to about 7/10ths but when you go out on a twisty road to hustle it, it’s not exactly a Miata or other sports car competitor.

I disagree:

A little extra grip when there is a sudden shower on a leafy or otherwise unclean road is very welcome indeed.

Sounds like the prefect time to let a RWD sports car play a little bit.

You can get 2% if you get a Fidelity account and their card.

But the tire used as a jack stand makes it totally safe.

It’s a lot more than $20k actually - long story but that’s about what I have right now that isn’t earmarked for something else and it is silly in my opinion to just let it sit there.  My wife said that if I want to get a fun third car now is the time to do it - just don’t make it a money pit. So the question is - if I buy a crappy old Audi for cheap and then spend a bunch at once to fix it up and drive it for a while does that qualify as a money pit? I think her and I may have different opinions on that.

Right now I’m kinda torn between one of these and a Miata.  I found a Miata that is also really tempting me, but it is dark gray and covered in scratches.  I wonder if I can talk them down in price enough to get it wrapped....

E92M3 mentioned that as well. I actually already have my work retirement account with Fidelity and had been looking at them for an investment account too just to keep it all in one place , so that sounds like a really good deal.

I used to own an NB. The  TT is fun enough to scoot around town in, and drive on t wisties up to a point. The Miata is much better for driving like an idiot.

This is probably stupid but I’m actually looking at an NC.

You should at least put it in some Vanguard funds or something easy like that - you’re losing vs inflation right now. You can easily cash it out when the time comes.

I f you run in the red with the Audi, I’ll call it a money pit :)

NCs are good too. Any Miata is more natural to drive at the limit than an OG TT. Just make sure to get a Miata with the LSD. Before the ND came around it was a pretty widespread option.
