Serious question- is there such a thing as hooning “responsibly”? And if so, what does it mean?

I used to assume that “hooning” was simply doing fun things with your car. But lo and behold the actual definition apparently has an antisocial element to it, where you’re not just having fun, but you’re actually being dangerous/reckless, hindering traffic, or disturbing the peace. Not exactly the crowd I want to associate myself with.

If that’s what it means to “hoon”, then hooning responsibly must be an oxymoron, and I need to find a different word that better describes how I enjoy my car.

You’re not really wrong. Which is why I always fall back to ‘spirited driving’ even though it sounds more pretentious.

Most of the time i t is an oxymoron, as typically the context is done in a public setting. There are some exceptions if you can find an abandoned airfield, or something. But even when you hoon alone in the wilderness , you’re putting your car and driving self in danger, so the amount that is responsible is relative.

As usual, the natural evolution of a fun concept is to start somewhere around Ken Block’s Gymkhana and end somewhere around blocking off the Golden Gate bridge with your friends so you can do burnouts.

On a long enough timeline, either you end up with a LS swapped miata, or someone comes in and ruins it for everyone else.

I always took hooning to mean fun, silly driving but yeah I g uess technically it’s got that illegal antisocial element to it (if we’re going dictionary definition) so there’s no hooning responsibly.

Don’t they have safety barriers though? Not sure if it still counts as hooning if it’s a sanctioned event with proper precautions in place.
