The Kid and I got to work on the Rabbit because my new 30mm socket came in the mail today. We got the old steering knuckle/hub assemblies out and everything ready for new ones to go in. Just waiting for them to get here. I can’t believe how easy this car is to work on.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

ive never taken hubs off a car before so that’s another check off the “car guy: to do list”. and as always there isn’t much better than seeing your kid laying under a car turning a wrench. He took off the passenger side break caliper completely by himself, after I showed him on the driver’s side. Also in unrelated news he’s getting the hang of biking standing up which is pretty stinking cool.

Welp, tie rods were not cooperating with me so I had a shop do it. Then the rack decided to only turn left, and a bunch of clicks when wheels centered & turning right. I parked it after that. And maybe I ran out of patience for an old car.

I got one tie rod out by tapping on blot with a 20lb bar bel because I don’t have a BFH. The other one I had to jack up the car on the bolt, and then hammer on the lower control arm and that popped it out. That was the hardest part of the whole deal.

Nice! Must be pretty sweet getting help from your son. I’ll bet those little fingers come in handy down the road, too.

What vintage is this Rabbit? I always hear that VWs are so hard to work on, but I’ll bet at this stage they didn’t have nearly the complexity they do now (or even had 15 years ago).

It’s an 84. All the annoying stuff on this one is gone as it’s mechanical fuel injection has been replaced by a Webber carb.

I keep finding Unplugged connectors  and plugged vacuum lines and for a second I get worried and then remember that mechanical spea king this car has essentially been taken back to 1972. No emissions controls, and no electronic controls.

He will come in handy when I replace the steering shaft bearing. I won’t have to spend so much time shoved under the dash!

VWs: thank goodness they’re easy to work on, because you’ll have to. (Don’t mention Mk4+)

Good stuff!
