I went to fill out an email contact form online and was presented with this.

Kinja'd!!!

The form says they are only accepting secure messages, but neither Google nor Facebook are what I would consider secure.

What would you consider secure?

Yeah... Except anyone and their dog can make themselves an account and new identity.

I would consider Google to be generally secure in the sense that it is relatively difficult for an outsider to compromise a Google account, at least if you’ve got two factor authentication turned on and take your internet security somewhat seriously. As to Google sucking up all your data and turning it into a product to be sold, that’s another argument.

Facebook security... I don’t have a Facebook since I refuse to feed them personal data , so I’m not too familiar with the state of their security. I haven’t seen a whole lot of news about them being compromised from the outside, but again they are using all your data for their purposes.

In the sense that Google and Facebook are difficult to crack from the outside, they are reasonably secure for the purposes of authentication of online forms. On the other hand, I do my damndest to keep all my online accounts siloed as best I can. There are only a handful that are linked, and those simply because there wasn’t the option of keeping a separate account.

For some reason my buddies accuse me of being paranoid about online and communication security.

I have two factor authentication on my google account. Anytime I sign in on a computer it sends a message to my phone. I  have to give my fingerprint and a code listed on the computer before it will log me in. Seems pretty secure.

Not using a service whose business model is based on selling information about you to anyone who will pay.

Yes, I’m not talking about security of the servers, etc.  I’m making an editorial comment on the behavior of the companies.

As secure as any email service, except from Google itself.

Remember the old saw about that. It’s only paranoia if they aren’t really out to get you.

I was making a commentary on being safe not from outside hackers, but  from these two companies that have shown they are willing to sell your data to anyone with a nickel in his pocket.

I get where you’re coming from, but from the perspective of secure authentication, email and SMS both have significant problems.
