I just got an email back from the seller of the Cayman. It has a Florida history, and was listed on the Jacksonville, FL, Craigslist but (wait for it) it is in Houston, Texas! Supposedly. Hah. Email included a link to inventory that I’m definitely NOT clicking on. Conveniently, there is the option to pay, have it shipped to me at no charge, and later get the title. How nice! There’s the scam.

I don’t really like the wheels anyway. Anyone in Houston who wants to swing by and see if the business or car actually exists, please report back, but I’m done, having been curious how long it would take for the person to set the hook. Here is the latest email, to which I will not be responding:

I have the car now at Edmunds Autos in Houston, TX, with the title, signed by me, keys and all the docs, and I have empowered them to transfer ownership on my behalf. You can go there, inspect it and than pick it up yourself Mon to Fri from 9 to 5 CDT.

If you do not have that possibility you can also do it online and have it shipped to you. You will make payment to them, they will secure your payment and ship the vehicle (all shipping charges will be covered by me). You will receive it, inspect it for 7 days and if you accept it, they will pay me and transfer the title to your name, if not, they will pick it up from you and refund your full payment. To go ahead you will need to set up a transaction trough Edmunds on their website: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! using my reference number ( 90DSS69FD9 ).

You can see detailed description and the History Report on my Edmunds listing here: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

[Edit] I just searched on the “seller” phone number in England, and found that it is used for telemarketing scams, and also found a similar experience described on Pelican Parts forum: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

You basically went to a facility that houses escorts  and said, “Yep, there’s sex for sale in there , alright.”

Considering google image search returns the pic’s source as a twitter feed for paint detailing and correction, yeah.

Yeah, the optimist in me started responding to the ad thinking there was about a 2% chance it was legit. I know now that a check like that would have taken that to 0% right away.
