... t o drive a Suzuki Jimny! I rented one for our trip to Iceland in a few weeks. It’s just my wife and me, it should be perfect. Plus, because we’re not in Auto-Merica, it’s a manual! Yay. Maybe it’ll even be a diesel.

“or similar” (please, for the love of Eyjafjallajökull please don’t give me a Rav4)

“or similar ” What if it turned out to be a Lada Niva?

Nice, that trip, Jimny and all, is  on my agenda for next year, if I can figure out how to afford to visit. (The airfare through Wow is dirt cheap. The costs for being there, however...)

You know what, if a rental company wants to give me one, I’ll take it. In Hawaii I rented a jeep that was seriously cobbled together from other jeeps. It was literally a jeep junkyard that  just threw parts together to make running cars to rent.

I would go for it, just to see. but just like the old saying “you never want to meet your heroes, lest you see who they really are” sometimes those foreign cars we never see in the US are a total let-down when you actually experience them.

e.g. the Dacia/Renault Duster. What an utter piece of shit that thing is. I don’t care how many cutesy jokes Top Gear  makes about Dacia,  I would gladly accept a 2008 Dodge Caliber over a Duster.

So, funny thing about costs. We are staying for “free” on hotel points. But here’s the reason we’re going in the first place: it’s our 10th anniversary, and we’ve got a wedding to attend on Nantucket (speaking of expensive...). We thought we’d just extend our stay there, but there’s only so much to do there and it was ~$300/ night for just about anything. So we booked $300 plane tickets to Iceland where we’re staying for free. Meals, etc are about the same in my estimation. PLUS I get to drive a Jimny.

Maui, Cheap Jeeps. Mind you, this was 2007.

Thanks! I wanted 4wd in case we get a little adventurous, as we tend to do. I have a friend who is a travel blogger and has spent a lot of time there, so I’ve gotten lots of good advice from him, and I hope to get some use from the Jimny other than strictly pavement.

I certainly will, although it will be hard to beat those taken by actual photographers with good equipment and patience. We’ll be more like, “hey neat! [iphone out the window of the Jimny]” but maybe I’ll bring a good camera... hmmmmm

Had a Kia Sorento when I was there (I think this is what our rental company Blue Car promised us). Worked pretty well for us.

(that pic was taken at 10 or 11PM)

This one was taken after deciding that driving up a little further was not worth the risk of rolling down (the road is nice and wide here, but just to left, it became an extremely narrow track running along a pointy ridge.)

Wow, that’s bad. But I agree. Would just be glad to drive something different.

The rental lots we saw in Keflavik had tons of Jimnys so you should be good to go!  I absolutely loved my couple days in Iceland this past June.  Bonus was that it was daylight the whole time I was there.  If you get a chance, try monkfish!

Awesome, wow. I guess lots of people have been there for a day or two, as a stopover - admittedly, we’re only able to be there for 4 days because of a wedding the weekend prior.

I’m into fish, what’s Monkfish like? Isn’t there some really weird, terrible thing they have there... I forget what it’s called.

It’s a lot like lobster but not as rubbery.  I absolutely loved it.  The gross one I’ve heard of is whale.  I refused to try it.
