Mexico’s soccer team sucks, and it’s great that we lost because Mexican soccer fans are simplistic asshats that are proud to waste money . We’re not a proud sporting nation, we’ve done little to represent other athletes who actually win medals while the FMF is caught in interminable cases of corruption.

I’m glad we lost againts the USA, a country that famously doesn’t even care about football and I hope it sends a message to all of these fans that you shouldn’t be proud of them and they should look at other sports or actually care about sporting infrastructure

I think I’ve yet to read a sentence with “Mexico” in it that doesn’t also have the work “corruption”. They go together like green eggs and ham. Which sucks, because from all I hear and see , it’s a wonderful people with a  rich culture in a beautiful land.

Well, we’re getting less corrupt for everyday that passes. But that also means we have more freedom of press, in turn thay means we get to actually know how bad it used to be and how bad it continues to be.

Although I despise the President Elect, I hope he does his job correctly, it seems like the new congress will open up with an austerity bill for government   execs, he’s bound to sign it but who knows if it will be followed, after all, the man that claims to be of humble origins just went on vacation in his “inherited “ 150,000sqft ranch.

I can’t believe I missed that. I normally include that in my rants.

Part of why I prefer college sports. At least the kids represent the school, and generally the region at least. And they have finite careers, so there’s an ephemeral aspect to the constant turnover that keeps things interesting.

Soccer is definitely gaining ground in the US. I go to our local matches fairly frequently. My daughters like soccer matches much more than baseball games, and there’s no way in hell I’m ever taking them to an NFL game. I usually sit in the supporter’s section with ‘Los Banditos’ as the tickets are cheap and my daughters love jumping around and chanting the whole match. Gets a bit rowdy, but everyone is cool with each other.

When I was in high school Mexico and Bosnia played a friendly in Phoenix. My high school had a lot of Bosnian refugees at it, and we had a mini riot the next day between a group of Bosniaks and Mexicans. The Bosniaks were severly outnumbered, but had a clear size advantage. Both sides fought valiantly.

I spent a lot of summers in high school and early college building houses in Mexico. It never struck me as any more or less corrupt than any other large institution. I think it’s just more obvious. Remember that the cartels in Mexico are fueled pretty much exclusively by American  dollars, not pesos.

    One of our fellow opponauts is currently overlanding through Mexico.

I’ve interacted with communities of all sorts of ethnicities, and racism seems to be a common theme in all of them.   All my Mexican friends have been working class and have been pretty open  about the racism within their communities.

I used to work retail and a lot of rich Mexicans who would come up to shop would identify as Spanish, which goes along with the whole classist/racist theme. A coworker from Monterrey used to start laughing any time people would say they’re Spanish.

Oh my mom does that all the time, outside of Mexico she’s spanish aparently!

Another thing she does is asume that any hispanic person speaks Spanish, so she’d start talking in Spanish to clerks in Target or CVS and get them all confused

I’ve asked her to stop but she doesn’t seem to see how disrespectful it looks.

I find it healthy that racism was discussed in the comunities you’ve been in, normally it’s avoided in both politics and in other issues in society (whitewashed marketing here is alof)

A few statistics regarding race came out (INEGI doesn’t report on race, #sad)  , and the results were frightening, specially when it comes to schooling.
