Anyone near Wilmington want to kidnap my parents and drive them to Virginia? I’ll reimburse you, provide you shelter, and cook good food.

Kinja'd!!!

My last smoked brisket. Delicious.

They live south of Wilmington near the coast and are being idiots. “It’s too late to leave”. You have two more days! Finish shit up and hit the road. I think my dad’s on board, but mom is being dumb. I swear to God, if I gotta drive down in the truck after this and fish them out I’ll be pissed.

UPDATE

They finally got a mandatory evacuation of their county, do they wised up and listened. Thanks for all the shared concern!

it’s a mandatory evacuation, don’t think they really have a choice anymore

Thier county isn't mandatory for residents yet

If I were involved in the evac of my great uncle from Southport , I would totally offer. However, I think an uncle of mine is conducting that, so I can’t really offer his time instead of mine. Also I think he’s already on the way up today.

Yeah, Southport is where they're at.

I would totally be down for kidnapping  olds in exchange for meat, but I’d probably get there right as the flooding starts.

I was briefly a member of a volunteer disaster response organization that sent members to a few hurricanes last year. I’m regretting leaving, but between a bad back and incompatible politics I felt it necessary to take a step back.

Best of luck, hopefully they’ll see sense. This looks like it could be one hell of an unpleasant ride.

Sign me up! I’m in Ohio but I’m cool with a what, 400-500 mile dash down and back. You just have to promise to pay my bail if I get caught speeding in Virginia. I’ve escaped them once. No guarantees it will work again.

Thanks. I agree, this doesn't look great. I sheltered a friend from Katrina for a free months, I'm guessing some of those low lying coastal areas are going to be similarly screwed.

I think troopers will be a little busy doing shit other than looking for speeders.

Also I think any judge will say fuck it. Storm was coming. Speed away all you want.

Good luck. It is absolutely 100% not too late to leave. That’s just nonsense.

I lived in Eastern NC for 5 years but I’m in PA now so I’m not much help. But they need to smarten up and get away from Wilmington.

About two miles as the crow flies. Well, if you ever need something delivered to them or picked up from them in future, send up the RamblinSignal.

My parents are in Norfolk and they are not leaving. They rode out the last one, and their house is on about the highest ground possible in the downtown area. I guess we’ll see how it goes.

My parents are a couple miles (like, 2) from the intracoastal. Not much high ground at all.

But it's not even the immediate storm that is the real issue. It's the aftermath where there is no power, water, or gas for upwards of weeks. Who the hell would want to deal with that? Seems like a good time as any for a vacation inland someplace.

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > Wrong Wheel Drive (41%)

My parents were without power for 1, maybe 2 weeks after the last big one. They could cook on a gas grill that is tapped into the house gas, but I don’t know what they did to keep their food from spoiling.

Holy ****. The frickin eye is going through Wilmington.

Kinja'd!!!

I assume they are out of the storm surge. Who cares. Have your mom talk to my mother in law about the joy of sitting at midnight in a closet wondering if the roof is going to blow off. (it didn’t). Then they can share stories about hanging out for a week with no power.

Hurricanes suck.  100 mph winds for hours suck. Blackout’s Suck. And that doesn’t even include getting hurt for no good reason sucks.

Anybody who doesn’t think so hasn’t sat a big one out.

tbh, I don’t know my own neighbors. If I’m lucky someone would notice that I haven’t driven in and out of my garage or come out of my house in more than 2 weeks. They’ll get nosy and peek through the window that I keep the blinds open for my cats.

Let's just hope they don't see the cats eating me

Heck yes. M y mother in law rode through Irma, which was category 1 and 70 miles away. Maybe her top winds were 100 mph. This one will have top winds likely at 120, 40% more energy.

In my perspective, it’s either you get them out now, or they force you to deal with a good 24 hour of no phone connection and uncertainty. Plus an urgent trip into a dis as ter area if they get into trouble.

Tell them you are going down to tomorrow to pick up the valuables. And they should follow you home. I don’t want to sound adamant but after my Mother inlaw wen’t through Irma, the next storm that looks like this and I am  driving 1500 miles to pick her up.

This is a really good site. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/212435.shtml?tswind120#contents

Decent coolers with lots of ice could keep most things fine for a while. Especially if you are able to get to a store with power for more ice. It just becomes "glamping" at some point. But I'd much rather just not do that and also risk being drowned/killed some other way anyways.

At least outcome it was a false alarm and it was a nice weekend with the kid. At best, it was hey; what was I thinking, thank God I was out .....

My 87 year old dad has a saying, if you walk long enough in the woods, a tree will fall over and kill you. Not grim, he’s just saying do not invite any more risk than you can. such as sitting in the middle of a class 4 hurricane.

Glad you are looking after them. They at their age more than anybody they know that other than their valuables (photographs, letters, wealth, etc.) the rest won’t be missed.

Enjoy the weekend with your folks!
