Who would have been at fault?

Kinja'd!!!

At drop off this morning I stopped to let my kids out, the parent ahead of me (silver car) cleared, and AS I BEGAN MOVING FORWARD and indicating my merge back into traffic, the blue car that was passing me cut in front of me to drop off. Not sure if they indicated, though I do not recall seeing them do so in my side view.

They were too close to my left front to see any lights. Yeah, it was that close.

They SHOULD have joined the line behind me, not cut ahead, in my opinion.

I honked, and she gave me a little ‘WTF?” gesture as I passed.

So considering that I was moving forward, and she entered my ‘lane’, would she be at fault?

I have no idea who would get a ticket in this scenario, possibly both of you.  That said, she should’ve joined the pickup line and waited an extra 39 seconds.

If Blue Car pulled that shit at any school my kids have ever attended (4 so far), they probably would have been banned from dropoff for life. Carpool has to be a predictable, single-file line everywhere I’ve been — not people randomly darting into traffic.

These are little kids, this isn’t LaGuardia.

indicating your intent doenst give you a right to the place you want to be in. I dunno who is to blame, my commentary is really just on your statement “Not sure if they indicated”. It is somewhat irrelevant if they indicated or not, if there wasnt room for them to move into the space, then they are indeed cutting you off.

blame though, I’d say there’s a reason everyone is meant to move at a slow speed in a parking lot, so that these sort of common issues are lessened in severity when they frequently occur.

I’d blame her.  shes probably the woman who would get all bent out of shape cuz her kid got punched in the face for cutting in the lunch line.  Well where do you think he learned that from.  grow up lady.

If it’s obviously a parallel parking style drop off, with cars pulling in and out the full length of the drop off area, then the Blue car was ok, though probably a bit fast and oblivious (From what I understand of the situation) .

If it’s obviously a line drop off, (which makes more sense), then the blue car jumped the line in addition to nearly causing an accident.

I get a little sick of people who take these “small risks” to save just a tiny amount of time. Running late yellow lights, not waiting for their turn at a 4 way stop, turning right along side another car when there is no turning lane... I get the feeling like I’m eventually going to have an accident with one of those people, and I’m sure they’ll claim I was in the wrong for hitting them when they were nearly running a red light.

The line system is universal, you join at the end, not at the beginning like some entitled asshole. That people have a problem with that concept is bizarre to me. Imagine if someone did that at a grocery store and then shrugged at you like you were the asshole. You'd kill them canned fruit.

They should have done the line, but they are one of those impatient assholes. My guess though is that you’d get the ticket since they were already moving and you were re-entering traffic; meaning they had the right of way. Parking on the side of a road isn’t considered a lane.

But given drop off conditions it’d like be both of you getting one.

Since she wants to join a more congested lane, she should’ve yielded to you.

In Mexico that’s called “lane invasion” if cops actually enforced the traffic code, that’d be a ticket for her.

However, if your lane was a parking lane, you should’ve yielded to her. But the marking doesn’t make that clear.

1st note, nice graphic.

2nd, it would depend on how the drop-off works, if it’s a line, or park and drop off anywhere.  If it’s a line, no cutting.  If it’s parking, they were moving, you were trying to re-enter traffic.

The simple way to fix this is to have cones outside your line corral. That’s what they do at my sons school. If you’re dropping off in the line you wait your turn, if you’re parking and bypassing the drop off line, you stay left of the cones and make your way into the parking spaces.

But to your question, yeah blue car screwed up, but as for assigned fault, it’s probably a toss up.  One of those failure to yield BS things.

I hold school drop off lines in contempt, and think it should work like any other drop off, in which case the blue car is fine (in this scenario, you should be moving from the shoulder to the road instead of pulling forward, and need to yield to the blue car).

All that said, it probably doesn’t work like that, pretty much every school I see does some super inefficient thing with lots of waiting in line. In that scenario, you are fine, and the blue car messed up by not waiting. No idea how it is signed or controlled (it would be nice to have a double-line between the drop off and the travel lane in this case to show that there should be a queue.

Why does it matter that they are little kids? All the complex interactions of an airport style drop-off are handled by adults, the kids just have to get out and walk a few feet to the school.

They’re unpredictable. At least once a week I see a kid get separate from siblings or a teacher and wander in front of/behind the car for at least a few seconds. You can’t expect the same judgment from kids (or legal accountability) .

My daughter’s school just had to institute a mandatory “put your car in park” policy after too many dumbass parents would reach into the back seat and their foot would come off the brake. Stuff happens.

But most of all, nose-first parallel parking in an obvious, orderly line is just a dick move at the best of times.

I believe that the bar for safe driving is higher around children than it is at an airport. That’s why they have school zones.

I suppose it depends on the “rules” of the drop off zone. My kids school is a free for all where there is no organization for where cars go, so in that case the scenario you described happens all day every day.

You. Joining traffic. Also, for for getting that the dumbest asshats on earth are people dropping their kids off or, for that matter, the rest of the public who are on their way to work and passing through a school loading zone. Dumbest asshats on earth. Everyone’s in a rush and everyone forgot how to drive. You should have looked over your shoulder and expected aggravated stupidity on the part of everyone else. So put yourself in that vibe and dropoff will become a much more pleasant -- less unpleasant? -- experience.

People entering the roadway have to yield to traffic on the roadway. I would put the fault on you, regardless of her being an impatient douche. It is your responsibility to safely merge back into traffic.

Its a free-for-all on the street here. Not sure what rules (if any) govern the parking lot which also has a drop of lane. I tried it once on the first day of school and it was a zoo. People letting kids out all over the lot, cars everywhere.... no thanks, the street seems safer-er.

I did shoulder check and noted her car passing me, the problem is as I started moving forward to merge behind her, SHE started merging toward the curb in front of me.

IF she had her indicator on then I’m pretty sure I would have noticed, and waited for her to pull in front of me.

If she had it on and I didn’t notice? Shame on me.

Re: late yellow lights, I have gone through ones I thought were borderline ripe, only to see two or three cars behind me drive through. I am scared these days if I stop I will get rear ended.

RE: original post, school drop offs are the worst, people talking for five minutes while dropping of their kid com bined with a line of 20 cars behind plus impatient parents makes for a good time for all.
