Something tells me I was right to suspect the master cylinder was bad.

Kinja'd!!!

I have never seen as master cylinder this nasty. Fortunately after some cleaning, the seal & shaft on the booster were still intact, so I shouldn’t need to replace that.

I bled the master, but need to pick up more brake fluid to finish bleeding the lines. Hopefully this will be the end of the brake saga.

The buyer showed up today to pick up the donor wagon. He drove 7 hours each way to get it, and was happy with it. I was happy to make back $500 of the $600 I paid for it. So it was a win for both of us

I want to meet the kind of guy who drives 14 hours for a $500 partially gutted 80's station wagon.

The MC in my crown vic was bad, I replaced it and the booster looked good. A couple months later there was a weird percolating bubbly sound from in front of me when the car was running.

After a lot of investigation, the old MC had filled the booster with fluid, and the booster case rusted through on the bottom, creating a vacuum leak which was percolating through the fluid, thus the comical bubbly noises from in front of the driver’s seat.

In short - might want to make sure you booster isn’t full of brake fluid. Who knows how long a previous owner just kept topping it off...
