I’m now working in/around downtown Houston and I’ve noticed some interesting police cars lately. They aren’t unmarked, but the markings are hard to see because of the color scheme. It’s usually white or a light silver on white or a dark brown/grey on black. I finally had a chance to take a picture of one yesterday. This is where things got interesting.
The Camaro pic isn’t mine. I found a website where they’ve been documenting police cars. (www.policecarwebsite.net) It just shows I’m not the only one who noticed.
I snapped this picture (the black Explorer) as I crossed the street. Look closely. It’s a marked police car. As I stepped onto the curb, he pulled away. I thought about snapping another picture, but that’s when I noticed the bike cop on the other side of the street staring intently at me.
I kept on my merry way and went into the building, not looking back because I knew he was following me. Sure enough, after I hit the button to call the elevator, the bike cop was at the security desk talking to the officers, still staring intently at me. I’ve been going in and out of this building for six months and I have an access badge. I’m friendly with the officers and they know I’m supposed to be there. But now, I’m sure some dude with a badge and a bike will be watching me.
If I’m lucky, all he really wants is two dollars.

There’s a small town near me that has one patrol vehicle. That vehicle is a black Tahoe with matte black lettering and all of the lights are hidden from sight. Absolutely overboard in my opinion.
I think we messed up as a society when police vehicles went from something very noticeable (blocky mixmatched black and white color scheme or bright
blue or green
)
to something that is being “hidden”.

It’s the difference between keeping the peace through presence and generating revenue through violations.

I’m not even going to think about doing that. It’s a great way to get killed.

Because I’m sure Detroit has so much left over in their budget, that they can afford this sort of thing.

I’m wondering if there’s some local/state law which restricts the number of unmarked cars and this is their way around it.

Oh that isn’t an accident
“Psychological tests have found that people associate colors with specific moods. For example, red is generally associated with excitement and stimulation, thus explaining why it is often a color in flashing emergency vehicle lights.
These tests have also found that the color blue is associated with feelings of security and comfort, and black is most often associated with power and strength.”

They did this in small-town Ithaca, NY when I lived there.
I hate it. Police should be visible, friendly, and helpful, not not sneaky, adversarial, and trying to look like bad-asses. I’d be much happier if they all had to wear Battenburg markings or similar.

Remember the good old days when in a emergency situation it was way to tell if some one was a police officer

This shit should be illegal. It's exactly this kind of stuff that makes people think police are the enemy of the public. Police cars should be well marked. I understand the need for unmarked/undercover cars, but under no circumstance should an unmarked vehicle be used for patrolling- it should be used for undercover operations only.

I hate to be cynical, but it’s an obvious quasi-camo job and gives them some plausible deniability when saying “It was a marked police car!”

In Toronto, they were called stealth cruisers. I personally think they're a dumb idea.

These cars are mainly used for traffic enforcement. Obviously they ‘blend in’ a bit better so the less observant people will be more likely to continue speeding/driving like a douche/etc within the sight of the officer.
It also indicates that it is true police vehicle to passers-by and not some random weirdo playing ‘policeman’ in his unmarked crown vic pulling you over.

Camaro (6 of them ) were donated by a local business man to HPD atleast 3-4 years ago.
They are extremely aggres sive as regards hand ling speeders and are seen strategically park ed along many freeways.

Fuck that noise. Cops are supposed to be public servants, not some kinda stealthy lurking assholes.
We should pass laws to make em paint their cars like the brits do:

In places where patrol vehicles need to be identified by law , these counted as “technically marked” but it’s sneaky business.
Beyind traffic enforcement, there’s no real solid advantage. For community patrol (which should be done on foot or bicycle as much as possible, anyways) they’re not sufficiently visible. For regular enforcement of all other events, who cares if you’re highly visible or not? And as someone else mentioned, having an easy to spot police vehicle in an emergency is helpful.
Like I said, it's sneaky business.

Oh, and next time, wave in a friendly manner to the officer and approach him/her to have a talk. They’ll be glad to hear your explanation and not have to worry about you any more, I'll bet.

AFAIK, it’s something along those lines. A lot of states seem to require that vehicles used for traffic enforcement are marked. This is one of the ways that PD’s like to get around that. They’ll also sometimes only mark one side of the car so they can park with the marked side hidden.
IMO, it’s bullshit. With the exception of detective/undercover vehicles, all law enforcement vehicles should be clearly and unmistakably marked.

Detroit cops also have hidden lights like the explorer in the post. I also spotted a similar paint scheme on a police Caprice in NC last weekend.

I looked up the law. The state requires every police vehicle to be marked. However, counties can “exempt” themselves and run unmarked cars. As far as I can tell, other political entities cannot. This seems to be a way around the state law.
