And I will be doing it on my next Hocking Hills trip.
An animal shelter near one of my favorite places to camp and hike is encouraging people to take one of their dogs hiking. The hope is that you’ll adopt, but as a dog lover stuck in a rental that doesn’t allow them I’d love to take one to help socialize them.

I bet they have a decent success rate. Get potential owners to bond with the dogs on a day of hiking versus a few minutes in a tiny room.

I like this. Though my last foster wouldn’t have done well, in addition to not really being built for hiking, she was vicious with other dogs, so it would be stressful as much as anything.
That said, if this is a general-purpose shelter, they probably have a decent number of well-adjusted medium sized dogs they could send out (including ones like the pittie pictured that people might be afraid of because of the breed, but would be more comfortable with after spending a day hiking).

That sounds like a great program. I'd love to hike with a dog, but the only way I could hike with my dog Olive would be if I carried her most of the way.
